Introduction

Unfaithfulness

A. Lies, destruction and doublemindedness.

Hosea 11:12–12:2 AV 1873
12 Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: But Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints. 1 Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: He daily increaseth lies and desolation; And they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, And oil is carried into Egypt. 2 The Lord hath also a controversy with Judah, And will punish Jacob according to his ways; According to his doings will he recompense him.
Hosea 11:12–12:1 AV 1873
12 Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: But Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints. 1 Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: He daily increaseth lies and desolation; And they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, And oil is carried into Egypt.
Hosea
James 1:6–8 AV 1873
6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering: for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
James 1:6-8

B. Unthankfulness

Hosea 12:8 AV 1873
8 And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: In all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.
Hosea 13:6 AV 1873
6 According to their pasture, so were they filled; They were filled, and their heart was exalted; Therefore have they forgotten me.

C. Help or destruction is God’s prerogative.

Hosea 13:7–9 AV 1873
7 Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: As a leopard by the way will I observe them: 8 I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, And will rent the caul of their heart, And there will I devour them like a lion: The wild beast shall tear them. 9 O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help.
Hosea 13:14 AV 1873
14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: Repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.
Hose 13:

God’s Desire

1 Corinthians 15:55–56 AV 1873
55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
I cor. 15:

A. Return to God

Hosea 14:1–3 AV 1873
1 O Israel, return unto the Lord thy God; For thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. 2 Take with you words, and turn to the Lord: Say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: So will we render the calves of our lips. 3 Asshur shall not save us: we will not ride upon horses: Neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: For in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.

B. Restoration by the Grace of God.

Hos. 14:4-7
Hosea 14:4–7 AV 1873
4 I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: For mine anger is turned away from him. 5 I will be as the dew unto Israel: He shall grow as the lily, And cast forth his roots as Lebanon. 6 His branches shall spread, And his beauty shall be as the olive tree, And his smell as Lebanon. 7 They that dwell under his shadow shall return; They shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: The sent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.
Psalm 1:3 AV 1873
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, That bringeth forth his fruit in his season; His leaf also shall not wither; And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

C. Righteousness by the Grace of God.

Hosea 14:9 AV 1873
9 Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? Prudent, and he shall know them? For the ways of the Lord are right, And the just shall walk in them: But the transgressors shall fall therein.
Hosea
Hebrews 4:14–16 AV 1873
14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
R0a
Romans 8:31–38 AV 1873
31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth: 34 who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Psalm 38 AV 1873
A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance. 1 O Lord, rebuke me not in thy wrath: Neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. 2 For thine arrows stick fast in me, And thy hand presseth me sore. 3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; Neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin. 4 For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: As a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. 5 My wounds stink and are corrupt Because of my foolishness. 6 I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. 7 For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: And there is no soundness in my flesh. 8 I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart. 9 Lord, all my desire is before thee; And my groaning is not hid from thee. 10 My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: As for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me. 11 My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; And my kinsmen stand afar off. 12 They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: And they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, And imagine deceits all the day long. 13 But I, as a deaf man, heard not; And I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth. 14 Thus I was as a man that heareth not, And in whose mouth are no reproofs. 15 For in thee, O Lord, do I hope: Thou wilt hear, O Lord my God. 16 For I said, Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me: When my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me. 17 For I am ready to halt, And my sorrow is continually before me. 18 For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin. 19 But mine enemies are lively, and they are strong: And they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied. 20 They also that render evil for good are mine adversaries; Because I follow the thing that good is. 21 Forsake me not, O Lord: O my God, be not far from me. 22 Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.
The victorious life that I now have should cause me to live a life filled with forgiveness, thankfulness, graciousness and submission.
Galatians 5:22–25 AV 1873
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Philippians 4:8–9 AV 1873
8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. 9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
Philippians 3:8 AV 1873
8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

Book Conclusions

A. For whom is this written?

This book was given by God for the specific time in Israel’s history when the nation was playing the harlot with other gods. Having put this in the canon of Scripture, God is certainly telling us here that we must avoid putting anything in His place, especially ourselves.
If you don’t acknowledge sin, you won’t value grace. If you don’t value grace, you won’t seek the forgiveness and rescue it provides. —Paul David Tripp

B. What does God want me to do learn from this book?

God does not desire judgement, but judgement is a result of sin.
Hosea 12:2 AV 1873
2 The Lord hath also a controversy with Judah, And will punish Jacob according to his ways; According to his doings will he recompense him.
Hos.
The Lord desires for me to have Him as the God of my life. Nothing should dethrone Him as the king!

C. Why is this important?

Because making God big and me small permeates every area of my life. If I constantly believe I know better than God, then what am I saying about Him? He is in adequate, but is He?—God Forbid

D. How should this affect my daily life? My whole life?

This ought to cause me to desire God and His Word more than anything. I should act and live in a way that supports a lifestyle of godliness
Hos. 14:9
Hosea 14:9 AV 1873
9 Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? Prudent, and he shall know them? For the ways of the Lord are right, And the just shall walk in them: But the transgressors shall fall therein.
1 Corinthians 15:55–56 AV 1873
55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
The victory that I cor. 15 shows us should drive us to holy living.
Romans 12:1–2 AV 1873
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
