Second Chance Sending

Read:
In , we see God give Jonah a second chance to do God’s will and that God’s plans always prevail. We also see Nineveh, a seemingly undeserving candidate, receive God’s mercy after turning to Him.

3:1 Then the LORD spoke to Jonah a second time:

2 “Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh, and deliver the message I have given you.”

3 This time Jonah obeyed the LORD’s command and went to Nineveh, a city so large that it took three days to see it all.

4 On the day Jonah entered the city, he shouted to the crowds: “Forty days from now Nineveh will be destroyed!”

5 The people of Nineveh believed God’s message, and from the greatest to the least, they declared a fast and put on burlap to show their sorrow.

6 When the king of Nineveh heard what Jonah was saying, he stepped down from his throne and took off his royal robes. He dressed himself in burlap and sat on a heap of ashes.

7 Then the king and his nobles sent this decree throughout the city:

“No one, not even the animals from your herds and flocks, may eat or drink anything at all.

8 People and animals alike must wear garments of mourning, and everyone must pray earnestly to God. They must turn from their evil ways and stop all their violence.

9 Who can tell? Perhaps even yet God will change his mind and hold back his fierce anger from destroying us.”

10 When God saw what they had done and how they had put a stop to their evil ways, he changed his mind and did not carry out the destruction he had threatened.

1. Unlike chapter 1, Jonah immediately obeys God’s command. How would you describe his reasons for obedience now versus then? How do we learn to obey God today?
2. The Ninevites were a people known for their brutality, and they all respond to God in repentance. What do you notice about how their reaction to Jonah’s news?
3. God was about to bring disaster upon Nineveh. Why is God the only one justified to bring judgement?
4. Jonah initially struggled with God’s command because it didn’t make sense to him. Could you describe a time in your life when you struggled with one of God’s commands or possibly something God was calling you to do?
5. How do you see God’s ‘second chances’ at work in your life?
6. How might the way the Ninevites respond to God affect our confidence in sharing our faith?
7. Does this passage comfort or challenge you? Why?
“WHO ARE YOU’RE NINEVITES?”
“GOD SENDS MESSENGERS NOT MILITIAS”
“THE CHURCH IS SENT TO THE BROKEN TO BE SERVANTS NOT SAVIORS”
“JONAH WAS SENT TO DELIVER BAD NEWS, THE CHURCH IS SENT TO CARRY GOOD NEWS”
WHY THE CHURCH STRUGGLES TO CARRY THE GOSPEL
LACK OF REPENTANCE
“DO OUR LIVES RELFECT THE SAME REPENTANCE WE SEE FROM THE NINEVITES?”
PRIDE & PRESSURE
“OUR RESPONSIBILITY IS TO FAITHFULLY BRING THE GOOD NEWS TO THOSE AROUND US, NOT TO CONTROL OR TAKE CREDIT FOR HOW THEY RESPOND...”
“JONAH WAS CALLING THEM TO THEIR REALITY APART FROM GOD WE ARE CALLED TO REVEAL THE REALITY OF RESTORED RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD”
WE ARE CALLED TO REVEAL THE REALITY OF RESTORED RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.”

14 But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?

15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”

16 But not everyone welcomes the Good News, for Isaiah the prophet said, “LORD, who has believed our message?”

17 So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.

THE CHURCH IS SENT TO BE MORE THAN A MESSENGER…

13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.”

14 But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?

15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”

“JONAH WAS SENT AS GOD’S MESSENGER, BUT WE ARE SENT AS CHRIST’S AMBASADORS
- MESSENGER: Just a voice delivering a message vs AMBASDOR: Empowered representative w/ rights & authority
vs AMBASDOR: Empowered representative w/ rights & authority
15 He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.
16 So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now!
17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
18 And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him.

19 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.

20 So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!”

THE WAY FORWARD
“REMEMBERING OUR REALITY APART FROM THE GOSPEL RELEASES US TO IMPART IT TO THE LOST & BROKEN AROUND US”
“IN BLAINE AS IT IS IN HEAVEN ISN’T A GATHERING ON SUNDAYS… IT’S THE RESULT OF THOSE WHO GATHER CARRYING THE HOPE OF HEAVEN INTO EVERY CORNER OF THIS COMMUNITY AS THEY EMBODY THE LOVE & GRACE OF JESUS”
