Authority of God’s Word

We said last week that the Word is the Bible, but we also talked about the Word being Jesus. That’s what the apostle John is talking about in John 1
John 1:1–3 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
So as we talk about the authority of God’s Word, we are going to look at Jesus.
We have a scene on the Mount of Transfiguration in

Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. 2 As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light. 3 Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus.

4 Peter exclaimed, “Lord, it’s wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I’ll make three shelters as memorials—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

5 But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.” 6

What is this scene all about? Who are Moses and who is Elijah?
Why are they there with Jesus? What is the significance of what God says?
Hebrews 1:1–4 ESV
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
Hebrews 1:1–5 ESV
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”? Or again, “I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son”?
The author of Hebrews is stating Jesus is the One to whom we should listen to as well, no longer what the Prophets told us, no longer Moses or Elijah or any other, but listen to Jesus.
This is not to say the O.T. has no relevance. In fact I don’t think you can fully understand who Jesus is, why He came, what He did, the magnitude of it all if you don’t have an understanding of the O.T.
But this is to say Jesus has told us all we need to know.
So what has Jesus told us?
Matthew 5:17 ESV
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Matthew 5:17
We understand fulfilled prophecy, this was said and it came to pass. But what does it mean to fulfill the law?
He fulfilled them with His perfect life, lived for us, and sacrificial death in our place.
John 14:6
John 14:6 ESV
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
What does this mean?
Jesus is the way to the Father, to heaven.
Jesus is the truth from the Father, about our origin, our purpose, and our destiny, our identity, about who we are, but most importantly, the truth about how to get to heaven.
Jesus is the life from the Father, the one with purpose, knowing we are loved by God, the one that knows it has eternal life with the Father.
How is this? No one comes to the Father except through Me, Jesus says. It is only by Jesus to we get these things.
Matthew 20:28 ESV
even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:
Jesus is going to lay down His life for us, as a ransom to purchase our freedom from sin and death.
As He frees us, it’s not to go on a live any way we want, it’s to live for Him, to honor His death with our life.
One last thing that Jesus told us.
Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Jesus has all authority.
Go and make disciples, followers of Jesus who want to tell others about Jesus.
Baptize them, be baptized and baptize others.
Teach them what it looks like to follow Jesus. Teach them how to read and understand the Word. Teach them how to tell others about Jesus.
Behold, He is always with us. What a promise. We are never alone, He will never abandon us, He is always with us until we die, then He comes and takes us home to be with Him.
