What the Lord makes clear is that he doesn't desire fancy buildings and animal sacrifices if the hearts of his worshipers are not righteous before him. So Haggai delivers a message to urge the people not only to keep working on the temple but also to do it from their hearts better right before God. We must understand that outward religion is never enough. God always looks at the heart.

Providential Blessing Overcomes Defilement

Haggai 2:10–19

  • Providential blessing, putting God's house first
    • Practical discipline is brought for failure to put God's house first
    • Providential blessing is brought when we put God's house first
      • The priority of God’s blessing
      • The promise of presence in our problems
  • Pure and holy lives bring about God's blessing
    • The problem: Holiness is not transferrable, but corruption is
    • The people: God blesses holy people not holy causes
    • The pleasing: God is pleased with inward holiness, not just outward conformity
