The Power Source

A few weeks ago we had a wicked wind storm. Many of us had damage to our property and/or loss power.
We had to chase a couple of our downspouts across the road.
We live in a world where we like our power. We like to be plugged in.
Don’t believe me?
Go to a coffee house - all the seats with outlets are taken first.
Go to the airport - people are actually in line to be the next to get plugged in to the outlet.
The Lord understood that we like and needed to be plugged in to a power source. That is why He left us the Holy Spirit.
Acts 1:8 NIV
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
The Greek word here for power is dynamis. Can you guess what English word we got from this?
When you have dynamite you can make a difference.
It is also the same word used for miracles in the Gospels.
The power is given to us for a reason. Notice the word “will.”
“you will receive power” (must)
“you will be my witnesses” (must)
It’s not a suggestion.
In the flesh we want power to get...
to get more
In the Spirit we receive power to give.
to get
When we look back two verses and read down
Acts 1:6–7 NIV
6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.
Acts 1:7 NIV
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.
I don’t know about you but I’m awesome on missing the main point at times.
Christ tells us that it is none of our business to know when He will return for us.
It seems that the disciples were also getting a little side tracked and Christ gets them back on track in verse with verse 7 and then in verse 8.
I believe if Christ were to be physically with us right here and right now. We took him to Crackle Barrel for lunch.
I believe He would say something very similar to what we see in verses 7 and 8.
We get caught up in small talk. We focus on and waste our time on things that won’t matter tomorrow. Christ tells us “you will be my witnesses.”
The power is given to us for a reason. Notice the word “will.”
“you will receive power” (must)
“you will be my witnesses” (must)
It’s not a suggestion.
In the flesh we want power to get...
In the Spirit we receive power to give.
You think Christ gives us power through the Holy Spirit just for us to have power. No, no, no!
You and I are given power for us to be witnesses. Power is exciting. Power is contagious. Ever been to a professional sporting event. The excitement is contagious.
Think about when Mary met Elizabeth. The baby leaped.
:39-44
Luke 1:41 NIV
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Luke 1:39–44 NIV
39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.
Luke 1:41
Luke 1:44 NIV
44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.
Luke 1
What was inside Mary was power and as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary’s voice, the baby in her got excited with that power.
You want to see your children excited about Jesus and be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit? They must see you excited about Jesus and filled with the power of the Holy Spirit.
None of this..
Somebody needs to change the world.
Somebody needs to do something about this problem.
Somebody needs to share Jesus with them.
Somebody needs to start a revival.
It all starts with you! Allow Jesus to change your life and allow the Holy Spirit to fill you with power.
Let’s take one more look at our verse.
Acts 1:8 NIV
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Remember this is Christ speaking.
Christ tells them the will receive power and they will be witnesses…to the ends of the earth.
Well I’m not going to Africa. Okay. Well, I’m not going to Mexico. Okay.
The verse says that “you will be my witnesses to the ends of the earth. But before that is says “in Jerusalem.”
Where were they? In Jerusalem.
Start where you are!
