As a youth pastor what does Jesus leaving 99 in to find the one mean to you in your ministry?
How does the target (group or kid) determine our method of reaching these kids?
What are some ways you can operate in their world?
How do you adept your ministry to begin with different kids where they are at?

Follow Through Care

Relational Ministry Actions

After committing to allow the six underlying principles of evangelism to permeate everything we do, we are ready for ministry. You can’t determine who will accept Jesus in your ministry, but you can determine what you do to reach them. These I call RMA’s.

Contacting

Meeting students in their world. Always go to your students activities (school, games, concertts, etc) with the purpose of meeting their friends. Contacting is initiating new relationships.
In Youth Ministry, you want to meet 3-5 kids every week.

Building Time

Spending time getting to know students by using a variety of activities that provide opportunities live out the Christian Lifestyle, and create the potential to take relationships to a new level.
It doesn’t have to be a planned activity to be a building time, every day shared experiences (like getting materials for youth meeting) can be great building times as well. Have a student bring 2-3 friends with you and get to know them as you share time.
Get a group and do something after school… a school activity… food… Stqarbucks… B&N

Large Group - Youth Service

A weekly large group meeting that is high energy, safe, fun, and non‑Christian friendly. The content is applicable to the students' everyday life and introduces the relevance of a personal relationship with Christ.
Talk about their meetings

Appointments

Meeting one on one with kids provides individual attention and helps you meet students specific needs. It allows you to find out where they are in their relationship with Jesus. Ask them about topics that are important to them and their friends.
Schedule appointments with students you may not have had much contact with over the summer...
Make appointments with new students… you may want to meet with them and the student who brought them.

Small Groups -

Small groups provide a safe environment for kids to grow… have needs met...
Support groups
Disciple Groups

Student Leadership

These are Christian kids you are discipling who want to reach their friends for Christ.
It is not you giving up leadership but part of the multiplication process.

Follow up -

Kids pray to receive Christ need to be followed up and have the basics of the Christian Life established in their lives. Being active in church and youth are part of this.

Trips, Conferences, Camps, Big Events -

Trips take students out of their environment. A conference or a camp gives you about a year’s worth of relation building with a kid.
Large Events - Increase the visibility of your ministry to other kids. They give your kids something to invite their friends to. These also create excitement in your kids which when used properly helps them grow.

Dealing with Discouragement

Discouragement is probably the biggest enemy you have in ministry… and it is the primary reason people get out of ministry.

What were some of the reasons Doug listed in his book for Youth Ministers becoming Discouraged?

Lack of Respect
Too many calls and emails to return
Miscommunication
Sleep deprivation
Conflict
Returning to church with a dent in the van
Criticism
Conflicting Expectations
No support from your senior pastor
Minimal support from parents
Failure to please everyone… anyone
Youth room a mess
Verbal abuse -
Students who are impossible or difficult to like -
Financial struggles
Unsupportive Spouse
A failed event or program
Your paycheck
Mondays
24 hour lock in
Youth ministry is not valued like other ministries

Do any of these resonate with you?

Three Feelings that will discourage your spiritual journey

I’m not worthy
I feel guilty
I feel alone

Truths about Discouragement

Discouragement is a reality in all ministry
Discouragement is painful
Discouragement is untimely.
Discouragement will occur after a great trip or camp or conference. You come hom on a high and your wife is complaining about something that’s broken at the house.
Elijah
Discouragement is Selfish
It’s me focused. “I get discouraged because of my situation, because of what someone said to me, because of the way a student treated me, because of the way a parent embarrassed me, because the leadership team doesn’t trust me, because the pastor questions my leadership. It’s self-centered, ugly, and wrong”
Discouragement is lonely.

1. Welcome Christ’s suffering
If we are going to be Christ-like, we will suffer. He did.
2. It’s ok to question God’s call on your life.
3. Discouragement is not a sign of spiritual incompetence.
No one has it all together all the time.
“Elijah was so discouraged and felt so alone that he was ready to end his life (); Jeremiah was faithful to God for years and never saw positive results from his ministry”
4. Keep first things first.
God’s expectation is that you and I remain faithful to HIM. It’s not about numbers… excitement or anything else… we remain faithful to him.

Practical Steps in dealing with Discouragement

Be confident that you are not alone.
Jesus has gone through everything we ever will.
All of us deal with the same struggles.
Find an Experienced Neutral Mentor
Paul told Titus to encourage older men to be helpers and mentors to younger ones.
Do you have someone in your life that is neutral and can encourage you?
Find a Friend outside of youth ministry.
It’s just as important to have friends outside of what you do that you can relax with and just be you.
Realize that not everyone will understand you and your ministry.
Take a Day off
Schedule time away
This is working time that you take to take care of yourself.
Jesus did this all the time.
Clear the Piles
Get some Sleep
Naps
Burn the candle at both ends burns up the candle faster...
Keep a journal of discouragement's
Keep a file of affirmations.
Make a personal commitment to last
