John 2:1–12 ESV
1 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him. 12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.
John 2:1-
Today we are going to be looking at a passage in john Chapter 2, and it is one that everyone in here is probably pretty familiar with. But what you may not be familiar with is the rich symbolism that is captured in these few verses.
Now before we get into the Second chapter of want to recap a little from last week.
And we saw that Johns mission in writing this gospel is that he wants to prove something to you and I, and that is not only is Jesus the saviour of the world, but He wants us to understand something richer, more meaningful than that is a saviour, that He is a prophet,
but that he is the One and only uniquely begotten son of God that takes away the sin of the world.
INTRODUCTION TO JOHN THE BAPTIST
In fact in the previous chapter we are introduced to another man named John the Baptist…
Now this is not the same John from whom this gospel is named, this man was the last of the Prophets.
And I am using prophet in the sense of the same type of prophets found in the Old Testament
Luke 16:16 ESV
16 “The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone forces his way into it.
Luke
That is with the arrival of John the Baptist, He became the pointman for the Lord Jesus Christ. He was prophesied in the Old Testament that he would arrive before the Messiah
John 1:6–8 ESV
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.
John 1:
John was the point man for the new Covenant. Now think about this for a second. He had his own ministry before He ever met Christ, but He was preaching that there was one coming whose sandals He wasn’t even able to tie.
John was the point man for the new Covenant. Now think about this for a second. He had his own ministry before He ever met Christ, but He was preaching that there was one coming whose
New Covenant, When the Son of God came upon the scene the old Covenant was coming to a close.
A new chapter was beginning in our redemption from sin, when men and women would no longer be justified by keeping the Old Testament laws and rituals, but God was now providing something different, something better.
God would deal with our sins not by adherence too rules and regulation, but God would deal with the sins of the world by providing himself a spotless lamb, and that Lamb would be His only son.
Now I am not chasing rabbit trails here, this fits quite nicely with the structure of Johns letter.
John 1:16–17 ESV
16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
John 1:16
Listen the enemy wants to weigh you down with the law, but God wants to lift you up with His grace....
It is from his Fullness we have all recieved.... And
it from His fullness that we are not consumed.
It is from his fullness that allows Him to take our weaknesses and to do some pretty powerful things.
If I have ever made you feel like in order to be loved and recieved by God then you must do this or that, listen the only thing you must do is come to the Lord and receive.
Last night my wife spoke a very powerful word to me that she I believe recieved from the Lord. Oh how good it is to have a women that can hear God’s voice for me when I cannot.
She said, CJ God told me that he doesn’t just love me when you are at your best, He also loves you when you are at your worst.
And as we saw last week, Jesus is the Word of God, He is the fullness of the Godhead in body form. He is God with flesh, and as the Word of God he came to reveal somethings to you and me.
HIS GLORY REVEALED
Now before I read our portion of scripture this morning, I want to focus your attention on the last few verses of this passage… Look with me
John 2:11–12 ESV
11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him. 12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.
John 2
NOW THERE IS A SERIES OF SEVEN SIGNS or miracles IN JOHN, AND THERE ARE SEVEN I AM STATEMENTS IN JOHN, that all have to do with Johns purpose and that is to manifest the Glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. I have seen it so many times, when thee
Now a sign is more than a miracle, a sign has significance. It is meant to relay insight.
Now many of you are familiar with this story of jesus turning water into wine. But what you may nor be that familiar with is all of the rich symbolism that is captured in this story. Now this is not a parable. This was an event that actually happened, but in the awesome wisdom and knowledge of God, and through the inspiration of the holy Spirit, this event had deep spiritual truths.

The Third Day-

John 2:1–4 ESV
1 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.”

Wedding

Now the fact that he was a t a celebration ought to tell you something about the Lord. He knew how to have a good time. He was a man of sorrow, yes. He knew how to weep with people. He took our sins upon Himself- but scripture
Hebrews 1:9 ESV
9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”
Hebrews
Jesus was a man that had great gladness and joy.
He is not this sour faced religious recluse that many people picture. He is a ma of joy, and that joy we can enjoy. No matter what is going around us
John 15:11 ESV
11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
John 15:12–13 ESV
12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
John 15:12
This is also sopmewhat prophetic- There is another marriage that He is inviting you and I today, and that is the marriage supper of the Lamb. There is coming a day when believers from all time will come from the North , South, East and the West, and there will be a celebration like none other.

Wine

John 2:3–5 ESV
3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
John 2:3-
Now what is significant about wine. In scripture is is an object of gladness and celebration. But it is also a picture of the blood of Christ. Think about it for a second. When we take the Lords supper
Matthew 26:27–29 ESV
27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
Now again I told you that this story is chalked full of symbolism

Well why do I say that the wine is prepresenative of the Blood of Christ?

look how Jesus responds
John 2:4 ESV
4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.”
John 2

My Hour has not yet Come- Woman what does this have to do with me?

John 12:23–25 ESV
23 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
John 12:27 ESV
27 “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour.
John 12:22–25 ESV
22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.
John 12:31–32 ESV
31 Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
John 12
John 12:35–36 ESV
35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.
John 12
John 12:22

Six- is the Number of man in scripture

Stones Pots used for Purification- This is man trying to make himself clean

Mark 7:1–4 ESV
1 Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, 2 they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly, holding to the tradition of the elders, 4 and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.)
Master of the Feast- Father God
He did not know where it came from- There is something that God cannot do… Do you know that? He cannot see your sin through the blood of Christ
His responce- you have saved the best for last- The devil doesn’t have any happy old people. he captrures people while they are young and they still have their health and youth, but it doesn’t take long for him to engrain himself in a persons soul
