Introduction:
Some time goes by.
Mankind has spread as generations pass and with it, sin has spread.
Wickedness grows so much, that God intervenes.
This is the account of the flood and earth’s reboot.
The Spread of Wickedness
Men of God and Daughters of man
Debated
children of Seth and children of Cain
makes Seth’s line sons of God
makes Cain’s line daughters of men
Sons of God are angels (demons) and daughters of men are humans.
This view sees this demon possessed intercourse
Even more wickedness than before
Sons of God are called angels in other passeges.
NT verses which tie demonic activity to pre-flood wickedness.
Angels are referenced in connection with pre-flood wickedness
Common objection
John MacArthur points out that this says they don’t marry, not that they are incapable of procreation.
To procreate physically, they had to possess human, male bodies.
I have seen both views
I lean to agreeing with MacAurthur.
Most likely, this is demon possession and ritualistic intercourse being discussed.
The main tipping point is “Sons of God”
Sin had spread and wickedness was great.
Sin was the birthright of humanity
Jesus spoke of these days and compared them to the days before His second coming.
The world goes about its business with no thought of God
We are there again!
The Judgment of God Decreed
God judges the earth
God declares the elimination of mankind as a “reboot”
God gave them time to repent as Noah prepped the ark
God was about to judge sin and wickedness and shared it with Noah.
Favor in God’s Eyes
Lest one believe that Noah was spared because of his good works alone (cf.
Heb 11:7), God makes it clear that Noah was a man who believed in God as Creator, Sovereign, and the only Savior from sin.
He found grace for himself, because he humbled himself and sought it (cf.
4:26).
See notes on Is 55:6, 7; he was obedient, as well (6:22; 7:5; Jas 4:6–10).
Noah found favor of God by faith, not works.
He also obeyed GOd
Noah obeyed
He began building the ark and preparing it.
Noah entered the Ark at the appropriate time and God sealed them in.
Judgment Poured Out
Global flood took place
Plate tectonics began:
fountains of the deep caused continental rifts and rapid spreading of Pangaea.
The fossil records shows a major shift and loss of life.
This matches the Biblical account of animal death.
Same sequence of sedimentary rock around the planet.
Most ancient civilizations include variations of the Flood in their Lore and Mythology.
and most of those include as a judgment of the “gods”
Conclusion:
God judges sin
We had better take that to heart
Confess our sins and turn from them
