5 Whosoever abelieveth that bJesus is the Christ is cborn of God: and devery one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2 By this we know that we love ethe children of God, when we love God, and fkeep his commandments. 3 For gthis is the love of God, that we fkeep his commandments: and hhis commandments are not grievous. 4 For whatsoever is born of God iovercometh the world: and jthis is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that iovercometh the world, but jhe that believeth kthat Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is he that came lby water and lblood, even Jesus Christ; not mby water only, but by water and blood. And nit is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, othe spirit, and lthe water, and lthe blood: and these three agree in one. 9 pIf we receive the witness of men, qthe witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God rwhich he hath testified of his Son. 10 He that believeth on the Son of God shath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God thath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us ueternal life, and vthis life is in his Son. 12 wHe that xhath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
Jesus is the Son of God
9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. 10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
FOCUS:
4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
5Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? 6This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
To be born of God, one must have repented of their sins and been born again of the water and the Spirit fulfilling all or regeneration req’s
Here the word overcometh comes from the Greek word nikao (nik-ah-o) which means to prevail or to literally subdue. In this case one could think of bringing the world to subjection of Christ in faith.
5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
Jesus is the Son of God
If one believes that Jesus is the one true Messiah they too will overcome (in contrast against false Jewish teachers)
9If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. 10He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
John was able to come and baptize with water, but only Jesus could come and atone for humanities sins for the past present and future.
Present Title and Pray
Water and blood define the purifying effects of Jesus’ ministry on this earth. If we analyze the prophets ministry, we will quickly come to the conclusion that they all desired to see Israel repent of her sins, but no prophet could pardon sin, only Jesus could do that. Even Jeremiah’s fountains of tears could not resolve the sin that had been commited; indeed, the world was in need of a savior.
By the blood of Jesus all sin can be removed and He can make His people holy.
Charles Spurgeon said it like this, “Yes, that awful trinity of evil, the world, the flesh, and the devil, shall not be able to overcame even one believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. Think of this, beloved, and let your eyes sparkle with the delight of anticipation; you shall one day have no tendencies to sin, you shall then be as pure in nature as the holy angels, you shall then be fit to consort with cherubim and seraphim and the glorified spirits that, day without night, circle the throne of God.”
C. H. Spurgeon, “‘By Water and Blood,’” in The Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit Sermons, vol. 57 (London: Passmore & Alabaster, 1911), 257.
Spurgeon is identifying that no evil thing can beat the Holy Spirit. When Christ died for you he left with these final words:
“It is finished” (Jn 19:30)
When Christ left this plane of existence he left it to finish the course of salvation; he left it to bring humanity to heaven with him.
Yet
A quote from Helen Keller:
Do not think of today's failures, but of the success that may come tomorrow. You have set yourself a difficult task, but you will succeed if you persevere; and you will find a joy in overcoming obstacles.
I would like you to
If I where to ask the question: who has failed Christ? Every hand in this room would be held up.
Let me state the deeper question, who here has failed Christ after being saved? Again, there is little doubt in my mind that every hand of those saved according to would raise there hand.
Even the born-again believers need to be overcome by the blood of the lamb in this very day and hour. Many have lost the keys to the kingdom because they have become crippled by their pride.
Let us go to to answer what an Apostle thought about arrogance of sin in the church.
The New Revised Standard Version Sexual Immorality Defiles the Church

5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not found even among pagans; for a man is living with his father’s wife. 2 And you are arrogant! Should you not rather have mourned, so that he who has done this would have been removed from among you?

3 For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present I have already pronounced judgment 4 in the name of the Lord Jesus on the man who has done such a thing.a When you are assembled, and my spirit is present with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 you are to hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.b

Notice Paul picked up on this through spiritual means, but by the power of the Holy Ghost. Paul could discern that the Corinthians had invited sin into their church. Later in verse 9 Paul actually directs the Corinthians to drive out hypocrites from the Church.
Ouch.. one could say that’s harsh Brother Berry, but lets go back to verse five. It would be better that their flesh be destroyed than their soul.
God and how He deals with Sin
He will send a crucifying agent for the flesh
He will let you know if you are being converted by the world versus converting those within the world
He will wax cold with those who fail to keep a relationship with him and leave them open to sin.
One will begin to fall into distractions and loose purpose in their life
To clarify, I’m not advocating against an outlet. Brother Noles would preach against that and well.. so would Brother Bagwill.
We must know his Word and Pray
Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
So let me bring it to your front door step:
do you struggle with one of these sins:
anger…the need to be perfect.
pride…the need to be needed.
deceit…the need to succeed.
envy…the need to be unique.
greed…the need to possess.
fear…the need for security.
gluttony…the need for pleasure.
lust…the need for power
laziness…the need to avoid.
Referring back to , it is important to understand that there was a form of arrogance in the church. If one would read in the KJV it states, “And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.” The issue was that the church would not discipline the man because they were comfortable in thinking they could live any way they wanted to. WRONG! The purpose of 5:5 was to remove the man until he had repented and destroy his carnal desires.
I’ll say this about that man, at least he didn’t live in the closet about his sin. At least he was honest. Today, we live in a generation were saints have become closet sinners.
Let me tell you something, why don’t you come out of the closet because everyone here is a sinner and has fallen short of the goodness of God.
BE TRANSPARENT - go back to list of sins

2 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, awe have an badvocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And che is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but dalso for the sins of the whole world.

1 John 2:1-2
1 John illustrates that all men will have sin and in fact 1:10 states that if we say we have not sinned we make God a lier. This, of course, is not possible as we know God is perfect.
We know the word propitiate means to regain the favor of God. In other words, the blood of Christ is the only thing that can save you from your past, present, and future sins.
Yet, so many times we spend our time judging one another against what states. To many people have unruly tongues as defined in James chapter three.
There is nothing wrong with having a past, but those who attend to control one’s future are hypocrites and put the body in flames.

16 vConfess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, wthat ye may be healed. xThe effectual xyfervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much

James 5:16
Sin is ugly any way you look at it, but if its under the blood God has forgiven it. How many times do we find ourselves attempting to hide sins away from Jesus though. How many times do we fail to accept the fact that we too are sinners and need Christ’s redemptive properties, His blood, applied to our lives? The answer to this question is way to many.
That’s okay because tonight is a new night and you can put whatever is in your heart under the blood. You can escape the second death through repentance and know that we all have fallen short of the glory of God. We all have commited unrighteous sins.
As Sister Kasey comes, I invite you to these alters. What sin has been pulling you away from Jesus?
