What god are you serving?

Jeremiah 2:13 ESV
for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.
I feel greater pity for someone who takes delight in a sinful deed! -Augustine
PSalm
Psalm 40:4 ESV
Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie!
Exodus 20:3-
Exodus 20:3–6 ESV
“You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
The first command tells us to stop worshipping the wrong gods! The second tells us to stop worshipping the wrong way!
The second tells us to stop worshipping the wrong way!
Exodus 32:5–6 ESV
When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the Lord.” And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.
Where sin is affirmed God must judge. Where sin is repented of Jesus saves.
Acts 19:19 ESV
And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver.
Following Christ means identifying idols and tearing them down! We are called to worship God alone while we enjoy His creation!
Romans 1:19–20 ESV
For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Sin is building your life and meaning on anything, even a very good thing, more than on God. Whatever we build our life on will drive us and enslave us. Sin is primarily idolatry. Tim Keller
Every sin leads to eternal Hell
Romans 3:23 ESV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1 Timothy 6:17 ESV
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.
Philippians 3:19 ESV
Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.
Romans 1:27 ESV
and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
Matt5
Matthew 5:28 ESV
But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
The fire of lusts pleasures must be fought with the fire of God’s superior pleasure! We must have holy satisfaction in God’s goodness. Delight yourself in the Lord!
Jesus is love and holiness, grace and truth, justice and compassion, wrath and mercy, jealous and happiness. We worship the living God!
If dumb idols are mistaken for the glory of God, they will always break our hearts!
They are not the thing itself

What water are you drinking?

God created man in His image, and man has been trying to return the favor ever since.
Isaiah 55:1 ESV
“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
John 4:10 ESV
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
If God doesn't make us mad, we’re not worshiping Him, but ourselves. -Karl Barth
The cross was God’s everlasting no to the most fundamental human idolatry of regarding the self as god. Mark Noll
Jeremiah 17:9 ESV
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
God designed the human heart to be complete and free in Himself! -JD Greear
The idols we rush to fill our lives with will never be God enough. They will never satisfy us like Jesus!
A consumerism Jesus may be one part genie, one part fan club, one part financial advisor, one part American patriot, and several parts therapist.
We trace the smoke of sin back to the corrupt worship of idols.
Stress, worry, anxiety, strife, jealousy, and dissatisfaction all are smoke rising from altars of false gods.
Are you harsh & judgmental toward others? You may have not experienced God’s grace!
Do you always agree with society? Your God is not transcendent!
Do you worry often? Your God is not good, wise, and sovereign as He is in the Bible!
Do you feel condemned? God is not a faithful, redeeming Father!
Are you jealous of other people? Your God is not glorious and all-sufficient!
You can shrink God and carry him of humble yourself and let Him carry you! JD Greear

My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
There was once in man a true happiness, now there remains an empty place… it can only be filled with an infinite God! -Blaise Pascal
4 ways we respond to idols

Blame yourself
Blame the World
Realize your need
If I find a desire which this world cannot satisfy, most likely, I was made for another world. -CS Lewis
John 7:37–39 ESV
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
The Holy Spirit is God. He is a person possessing a will, intellect and emotions. He is God -- with all the attributes of deity. He is the third person of the Trinity -- co-equal with God the Father and God the Son.
Ephesians 5:18 ESV
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
Galatians
Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Colossians 3:16 ESV
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
The Word of God is closed to our understanding and has little meaning to us apart from the illumination given by the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is hindered in speaking clear and life changing truth apart from the Word of God.
Be filled with the Holy Spirit (breathing)
Live a life pleasing to the LORD!
Surrender your life totally to our LORD Jesus! (Rom 12:1-2)
