Lord’s Supper

When Jesus and the disciples were at their last meal together, the Lord Jesus gave to them the understanding of the rich symbolism that we have in the Lord’s Supper. Luke’s Gospel says this in chapter 22...

19 And he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

20 In the same way he also took the cup after supper and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

This practice, or ordinance, was delivered to us through God himself. And since we have such a holy example of the practice, we can be sure of it’s meaning. The Lord Jesus explains it himself in its administration.
He says that the bread is his body.
Jesus was hung on the cross and took the full wrath of God so that we wouldn’t have to. He paid the penalty for our collective sin across the generations. So whenever we take the bread, we are remembering that.
And not only us, but the whole of Protestant Christianity partakes of the same bread, spiritually. We are all collectively partaking in the holy sacrifice of Jesus body. The Apostle Paul says this...
The Lord Jesus explains it himself in its administration.

The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, since all of us share the one bread.

The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, since all of us share the one bread.

But he also says just before that...

16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ?

And the wine is his blood. But so much more than mere blood, the wine is the symbol of the new covenant. That blood that Jesus spilled was poured out as a offering to the Father. As true believers and followers of the Lord Jesus, his blood is our admittance into the new covenant. His blood paves the way for our access to the Father in paradise.
The wine is symbolic of his blood. But so much more than mere blood, the wine is the symbol of the new covenant, which the Lord said himself. That blood that Jesus spilled was poured out as a offering to the Father. As true believers and followers of the Lord Jesus, his blood is our admittance into the new covenant. His blood paves the way for our access to the Father in paradise.
And this is why some call it communion, because through these elements we commune with the Father with Jesus as our mediator. His body and blood, placed on us, gives us as sinful people a perfect standing with the Father.
(Pause)
So today we look to the instructions given to us by the Apostle Paul, which comes from his first letter to the Corinthians.

For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

I would like to preface that this ordinance is for follower’s of Jesus only. It doesn’t matter if you are a member of this church or not, whether you’ve been coming for years or this is your first day. If you are a faithful follower of Jesus, you can take with us today. I only ask that you please hold on to the bread and the cup until we have prayed so that we may all take together as one body of believers, the LORD himself present with us.
Please hold on to the bread and the cup until we have prayed so that we may all take together.
