Ecclesiastes 1:9–10 ESV
9 What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. 10 Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has been already in the ages before us.
Ecclesiastes 1:9 ESV
9 What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.
Eccl 1:
You’re not learning old stories, but the Word of God
Colossians 2:4–10 ESV
4 I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments. 5 For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ. 6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.

Then 6-10
Does this mean that all philosophy is bad? All human tradition?
What are some examples of philosophy/empty deceit?
How can we distinguish between what is empty deceit and damaging tradition?
Mormonism
Joseph Smith
Tennets—pantheon of gods, perfection reachable, eternal family successions, man is generally good
Gospel—Jesus is firstborn, had a plan of salvation next to Lucifer, perfected and became a god, you can be saved after all your effort is good enough
2 Nephi 25:23
What’s wrong with that?
Our founder is a God who died and rose from the dead
One true God, perfect and holy, mankind has fallen, generally evil,
Who is Jesus? Read
Gospel
What about the god of Success?
You’re reading stories about you in SS—you’re not so different
Nobody in here is Mormon, but you all feel the pressure to succeed
What about the pressure in America and being a Chinese-American is taking you captive away from Christ? That Jesus isn’t enough?
