Often, God does not bless us while we are condoning and allowing sin in the camp. Corporate sin must be dealt with if we will have corporate blessings from God just like in the personal realm.

Joshua 7:1 ESV
But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things, for Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. And the anger of the Lord burned against the people of Israel.
Notice a few things
The people of Israel did what?
-- broke faith
In this context:
What does it mean to have faith?
What does it mean to not have faith?
-- to disobey
Notice,
Who broke faith?
-- All the people of Israel
-- Achan
Which one? All the people or just one?
--One
-- All
But wait, did all these people even know what Achan had done???
-- no
How can God hold them accountable for one individual persons sin, which they didn’t know about!?!
--
Does one man’s sin hurt the whole congregation? Even if we say, most don’t know about it?
-- yes
Joshua 7:2–3 ESV
Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, “Go up and spy out the land.” And the men went up and spied out Ai. And they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not have all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not make the whole people toil up there, for they are few.”
They did a lot of nice stuff here.
What did they not do?
What did they forget to do?
-- pray
-- talk to God about it.
Joshua 7:4–5 ESV
So about three thousand men went up there from the people. And they fled before the men of Ai, and the men of Ai killed about thirty-six of their men and chased them before the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them at the descent. And the hearts of the people melted and became as water.
What was the result of going on their own path, not talking to God about the situation, and walking out in sin and separated from God?
-- failure
-- death
-- judgment
-- God’s blessings were not with them
-- the natural result of separation from God - troubles
Joshua 7:6–9 ESV
Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until the evening, he and the elders of Israel. And they put dust on their heads. And Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord God, why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all, to give us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us? Would that we had been content to dwell beyond the Jordan! O Lord, what can I say, when Israel has turned their backs before their enemies! For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it and will surround us and cut off our name from the earth. And what will you do for your great name?”
What do you think about Joshua’s prayer?
--
Have you ever prayed like that?
--
He is sad things
are not going well.
complaining to God.
Yet,
he has no idea
what is going on.
Have you ever wondered:
“Why God have you
removed your blessings?”
Joshua 7:10 ESV
The Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face?
How does the Lord answer His prayer?
-- Stop praying!
In all the Bible,
I don’t know of
another place
where God says
stop praying!
What stop praying?
-- I can hear you now.
-- You are separated from me.
-- You have something to address
If you are taking
a sacrifice to the altar
and you remember
problem between your neighbor
leave sacrifice
fix problem
then go back to God.
Joshua 7:11 ESV
Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings.
God explains very clearly why they were defeated.
Why?
-- Israel has sinned
Again, who sinned?
-- All of Israel
Who took the devoted things?
-- “they”
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 45—The Fall of Jericho

Achan’s sin brought disaster upon the whole nation. For one man’s sin the displeasure of God will rest upon His church till the transgression is searched out and put away. The influence most to be feared by the church is not that of open opposers, infidels, and blasphemers, but of inconsistent professors of Christ. These are the ones that keep back the blessing of the God of Israel and bring weakness upon His people.

What is the most dangerous issue we can face as a church?
— “inconsistent professors of Christ”
What keeps back the blessings of God from our congregation?
-- sin in the camp
Why are we not see 100 baptism where there is now 1?
Joshua 7:12 ESV
Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will be with you no more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.
What is the result of sin in the camp?
-- God is not with them.
Have you ever wondered why we are not more successful in conquering North Platte?
-- I believe that this is at least part of the reason.
What is the only solution?
-- “destroy the devoted things from among you”
-- deal with the sin, now
What would have happened if they would have just kinda swept it under the rug?
-- disaster
-- God would not go with them
-- destroyed by their enemies
Joshua 7:13 ESV
Get up! Consecrate the people and say, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow; for thus says the Lord, God of Israel, “There are devoted things in your midst, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted things from among you.”
The people:
weeping
praying
mourning
interceding
Again, God says what?
-- stop praying
-- get up
-- I will not answer your prayers.
-- you have something to do first.
Joshua 7:14–15 ESV
In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes. And the tribe that the Lord takes by lot shall come near by clans. And the clan that the Lord takes shall come near by households. And the household that the Lord takes shall come near man by man. And he who is taken with the devoted things shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he has done an outrageous thing in Israel.’ ”
Get up and do what?
What were they required to do in the morning?
-- find the thing that is hindering God’s leading
-- deal with it
Why burned with fire?
-- because that is what was supposed to happen to the to the garments in the first place.
What does it mean that it was a devoted thing?
-- all of the cities after Jericho they were allowed to take the booty from the city.
-- but the first city, all of the silver and God was for God
-- God recieved the first fruits
--Achan took what was actually devoted to God
Have you ever taken something that was devoted to the Lord?
-- tithes?
Joshua 7:16–19 ESV
So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel near tribe by tribe, and the tribe of Judah was taken. And he brought near the clans of Judah, and the clan of the Zerahites was taken. And he brought near the clan of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was taken. And he brought near his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the Lord God of Israel and give praise to him. And tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.”
The did what the Lord said.
The Lord revealed the sin/sinner.
Joshua’s words are peculiar:
“My son, give glory to the Lord God of Israel and give praise to him. And tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.”
Those are odd words.
What does it mean to give glory to God?
-- it is in the context of judgment
What does it mean to praise Him?
-- worship him
-- but you cant worship
when your heart is
not right with him
-- it means to
come to God
be in right standing
and worship
Is there somewhere else where we see these words?
Revelation 14:6–7 ESV
Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”
And what are the next words
-- come out of sinful Babylon
What what is the next message?
-- don’t receive the mark of the beast
Do you see how fearing God, giving God glorying, and worshiping him, set you free from falling into Babylon and following the beast?
--
Joshua 7:20–21 ESV
And Achan answered Joshua, “Truly I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I did: when I saw among the spoil a beautiful cloak from Shinar, and 200 shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing 50 shekels, then I coveted them and took them. And see, they are hidden in the earth inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”
It sounds like he confesses his sins here.
Why doesn’t God forgive him?
-- because he is unrepentant
How do you know that he is unrepentant?
-- because the confession is forced
-- he made no change on his own
-- he made no change when he had the chance
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 45—The Fall of Jericho

Achan acknowledged his guilt, but when it was too late for the confession to benefit himself. He had seen the armies of Israel return from Ai defeated and disheartened; yet he did not come forward and confess his sin. He had seen Joshua and the elders of Israel bowed to the earth in grief too great for words. Had he then made confession, he would have given some proof of true penitence; but he still kept silence. He had listened to the proclamation that a great crime had been committed, and had even heard its character definitely stated. But his lips were sealed. Then came the solemn investigation. How his soul thrilled with terror as he saw his tribe pointed out, then his family and his household! But still he uttered no confession, until the finger of God was placed upon him. Then, when his sin could no longer be concealed, he admitted the truth. How often are similar confessions made. There is a vast difference between admitting facts after they have been proved and confessing sins known only to ourselves and to God. Achan would not have confessed had he not hoped by so doing to avert the consequences of his crime. But his confession only served to show that his punishment was just. There was no genuine repentance for sin, no contrition, no change of purpose, no abhorrence of evil.

At the end of the world
something similar will occur.
Philippians 2:9–11 ESV
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Who will confess?
evil angels
evil people
Satan himself
Are they repenting?
no
repenting of the consequences
not the sin
Joshua 7:22–23 ESV
So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was hidden in his tent with the silver underneath. And they took them out of the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the people of Israel. And they laid them down before the Lord.
Why was it necessary to bring the evidence?
--
How is this is like the investigative judgment.
--
Joshua 7:24–26 ESV
And Joshua and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver and the cloak and the bar of gold, and his sons and daughters and his oxen and donkeys and sheep and his tent and all that he had. And they brought them up to the Valley of Achor. And Joshua said, “Why did you bring trouble on us? The Lord brings trouble on you today.” And all Israel stoned him with stones. They burned them with fire and stoned them with stones. And they raised over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day. Then the Lord turned from his burning anger. Therefore, to this day the name of that place is called the Valley of Achor.
Troubler of Israel
How did he get to this point?
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 45—The Fall of Jericho

Covetousness is an evil of gradual development. Achan had cherished greed of gain until it became a habit, binding him in fetters well-nigh impossible to break. While fostering this evil, he would have been filled with horror at the thought of bringing disaster upon Israel; but his perceptions were deadened by sin, and when temptation came, he fell an easy prey.

There is another passage
where someone is called
the troubler of Israel.
1 Kings 18:17–18 ESV
When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, you troubler of Israel?” And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father’s house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the Lord and followed the Baals.
What/who is a the troubler of Israel?
-- Ahab
Did you notice, who was the one, to be accused of being the troubler.
Why?
-- unrepentant people always blame others
Notice something else.
Who stoned him?
-- “all Israel”
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 45—The Fall of Jericho

As the people had been held responsible for Achan’s sin, and had suffered from its consequences, they were, through their representatives, to take part in its punishment. “All Israel stoned him with stones.”

Why did all of them have to stone him?
-- he cursed the body with his sin
In effect,
all Israel were sinners
Now all
must be cleansed
by judging and condemning
the sin in the camp.
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 45—The Fall of Jericho

When the church is in difficulty, when coldness and spiritual declension exist, giving occasion for the enemies of God to triumph, then, instead of folding their hands and lamenting their unhappy state, let its members inquire if there is not an Achan in the camp. With humiliation and searching of heart, let each seek to discover the hidden sins that shut out God’s presence.
