Intro — As we approach and become fully engaged in the advent of Passion week, let us not forget what God’s intent was and is, with regard to the life of His Son, Jesus the Christ. The adage says that He died that we might live. In other words, the Messiah did not die and was then resurrected to show us how to die. He died so that we would have an example as to how we should live. Paul understood this and wrote, “I beseech ye therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” The word service in the Text is the Greek word that would be used to describe the service priests would render in the temple. This tells me that God does indeed receive our worship as service to Him. This is important because we live in a time when so many people discount the discipline of going to church. Many will even belittle those who are committed church goers.

I. Have to Have the Right Mind
It is believed that this letter to the church of Philippi was written about 30 years after his conversion and yet Paul is saying that he is not yet what he should be as a Christian.
Paul is not giving in to the Judaizers who portend that the Law offers the opportunity to be spiritually perfect. What keeps many of us from being what we can be for Christ is that we have the wrong outcome in mind. We want big congregations, big salaries, extravagant trappings that everyone sees. Jesus reminds that saints in that we are to lay up our treasures in heaven.
II. Have the Right Man
Let’s stop concentrating so much on how to be successful for man and consider rather how we can be excellent for God. Verse 20 says that our “conversation” or citizenship is in heaven. God wants somebody who will talk about heaven they way that talk about their upcoming cruise. Is there somebody concerned about the treasure they have in heaven more than the bling they have on earth?
