This is the last study on Sound doctrine. We have Gone through a lot of different things but the subject this morning is extremely important. A couple of weeks ago Steve said jokingly we have been doing all this work on sound doctrine, when will we get to the unsound doctrine? Well we are going to talk about that today. There are people out there who pervert the gospel of Jesus Christ. They make salvation out to be something you earn. or they put restrictions or qualifiers on salvation
you cant be saved if...
you are only saved if you...
Friends you can not qualify the grace of God. It is a free gift that none of us deserve. Paul in his letter to the Galatians, dealt with some people who where doing this same things. Some of the Jews in the church had said that you must follow the Law of Moses in order to be saved. Paul in our text defends the free grace of God through Jesus Christ.

6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.

10 For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ

There are other gospels out there. Gospels in which you have to do something in order to be saved. Gospels that would add a burden to you. Gospels that pervert the truth. This text shows the seriousness of the purity of the Gospel. The Galatians where deserting the Gospel of grace. Now, why were they deserting the gospel, in verse 6? Because of those who were perverting the gospel, in verse 7. There were those who would trouble you and would pervert the gospel of Christ. And by the way, Satan is a pervert. He has no original material. All Satan can do is take that which is good, and pure, and holy, and righteous, and pervert it.

Why had the devil rather pervert the gospel than deny the gospel? Well, if he can pervert the gospel and get you to believing a corrupted gospel rather than a true gospel, you’ll be satisfied with the substitute and become a synthetic Christian. What God wants is for you to believe the true gospel. And so, Satan has come with a substitute gospel (verse 7). That is, it’s a substitute; it’s an imitation: “which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.”
We want to
Now let us look at the true Gospel

Salvation by grace

The believers in Galatia had been influenced by the jews who said that they must fullfill the law in order to be saved by Christ.
Salvation is not by works of the law.

Titus 3:5 NKJV
not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,

Whether I am good or bad, whether I keep the law or not has nothing to do with salvation. Salvation is a free gift of God’s grace

Ephesians 2:8–9 NKJV
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
We are not saved by doing anything except believing
As many of us do, we go out to lunch after Sunday morning service. One particular Sunday we were seated next to some Pentecostal folks. They must have known that we where baptist because one of the men said a little too loudly. “Baptists just don't get it. If you are not baptized by the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongs you are not saved!” I rely wanted to quote Titus real loud back but I did not. That very popular opinion now a days is a works based Gospel. If I have to do anything to be saved, salvation is not by grace but by works

No Other Gospel

Galatians 1:7 NKJV
which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.
There is no other Gospel other than the gospel of grace.

In World Vision, writer Tony Campolo tells of taking an airplane from California to Philadelphia one stormy night. It was late, but when the man in the next seat learned that Campolo was a Christian, he wanted to talk. “I believe that going to heaven is like going to Philadelphia,” the man said. You can get there by airplane, by train, by bus, by automobile. There are many ways to get to Philadelphia. Campolo writes:

As we started descending into Philadelphia, the place was fogged in. The wind was blowing, the rain was beating on the plane, and everyone looked nervous and tight. As we were circling in the fog, I turned to the theological expert on my right. “I’m certainly glad the pilot doesn’t agree with your theology,” I said.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“The people in the control booth are giving instructions to the pilot: ‘Coming north by northwest, three degrees, you’re on beam you’re on beam, don’t deviate from beam.’ I’m glad the pilot’s not saying, ‘There are many ways into the airport. There are many approaches we can take.’ I’m glad he is saying, ‘There’s only one way we can land this plane, and I’m going to stay with it.’ ”

There is only one way to God, and that is through Jesus Christ

Paul in rebuke of false teachings in the Corinthian church, laid out the gospel for them
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 NKJV
Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,
notice how in verse 2 it says by which you are saved. Is there anything in this list that you do? no. Christ did it all.
There is no gospel other than Christ died, was buried, and rose again for the sins of the world.

False teachers will be cursed

Galatians 1:8 KJV 1900
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
Lexham Theological Wordbook ἀναθεματίζω

ἀναθεματίζω (anathematizō). vb. to invoke a curse, bind with an oath. Used to indicate a binding promise, with divine harm as the consequence.

Paul wanted the Galatian believers to know that whom ever preached false teachings would bring upon themselves a form of divine judgement. Teachers must be careful.
James 3:1 NKJV
My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.
Teaching is an important role. we must take it seriously.
What did they do to false teachers and false prophets in the OT?
Deuteronomy 13:1–5 ESV
“If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, ‘Let us go after other gods,’ which you have not known, ‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For the Lord your God is testing you, to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him. But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has taught rebellion against the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you out of the house of slavery, to make you leave the way in which the Lord your God commanded you to walk. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.
False teaching and teachers are a dangerous thing, therefore we must not be led astray by them

Watch out for false teachers

Matthew 7:15–16 ESV
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?
Mt 7:1
We must be on the lookout for those who would lead us astray
Knowing the word of God
2 Timothy 2:15 ESV
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
