3 ways can’t relate: 1) marginalization; 2) demon possession / reputation / overcoming credibility issue ( bad reputation / 3) Overcoming credibility
1) Intro. Marginalization of women
1) Intro. Marginalization of women
can’t relate - woman; demon possession; showing God’s leaders how it’s done
surprises me: opposition to woman voting; women clergy; Bible times - property; polygamy; vulnerable to accusation; divorce
whom do we marginalize? who is looking for attention? what do we do to get attention?
1) tactics - raising voice; tantrum, squeaky wheel; obnoxious behaviour
2)) political groups (race, income, profession, UMC) wanting to make sure they are not marginalized; 3) non-profits: Nicaragua, Safe Nights, Project Echo (homeless), Farming 4 Hunger (incarcerated persons)
A Liberated Soul (not a liberated reputation)
A Liberated Soul (not a liberated reputation)
demon possession
e.g. Pentecostal Church (choir member - embarrassing testimony, grew up in the area; drug addiction; public arrests; reputation on campus
e.g. high school student - reputation; embarrassed to take to banquet
demon possession - caring more about reputation than story
demon possession - caring more about reputation than story
and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out;
an embarrassing past (throwing yourself on the ground; indecent; vulgar language
can’t eliminate that from your mind
Gospel’s emphasize what she has become
here’s what a liberated soul looks like: Doing 2 things despite lack of credibility; who would believe me? who is talking about me, remembering my past? examining my credentials? ignoring me; marginalizing me; big barrier to evangelism - lack of credibility; feeling marginalized, unimportant; how to share the Gospel if your life hasn’t been changed?
1) Leaving Everything; 2) Sharing About Jesus
1) showing how discipleship is done
1) showing how discipleship is done
a. money
Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.
Luke 8:
After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him,
How did he get paid? Rich benefactors. Jesus mocked because of his choice of followers; low standard
left money; no husband that we know of;
b. to the end
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
The First Christian Sermon
The First Christian Sermon
first is best; not best
Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.
first is important
