Intro:

AG: It has been said, “You’ll never see a uhaul behind a hearse.
TS: The last part of ch 6 deals with the wrong perspective on material things. He is still challenging the religious people to abandon their false rituals for true righteousness. The religious leaders of the day were consumed by greed and He once again points out the fallacy of their man made religion
RS:
Matthew 6:19–24 ESV
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

Treasure Storage

Temporary on Earth

Not on Earth

Matthew 6:19 ESV
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,
Earthly treasure is temporary. It cannot last. There are natural and human forces which will erode all things on earth.
Moths eat it
Rust corrodes it
Thieves can steal it.
If your faith and trust is in the temporal, it will let you down.
New cars loose that new car smell
New clothes wear out
If you chase more things, it will never be enough.
It won’t satisfy
Jesus is NOT saying
we must take a vow of poverty
This doesn’t forbid:
owning a house
saving for retirement
owning a phone.
etc.
Jesus is condemning greed.
Jesus is condemning greed.
He is condemning making the acquisition of things the purpose of your life.
Matthew 2:12–13 ESV
And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.”
Matthew 21:12–13 ESV
And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.”
Matthew 21:12–17 ESV
And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.” And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read, “ ‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise’?” And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there.
Greed is the desire for material gain. It is a complete focus on the hear and now and what we can gather here on earth.
Mt
Luke 12:15 ESV
And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
1 Corinthians 6:10 ESV
nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
Ecclesiastes 5:10 ESV
He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity.
Eclesiastes

Eternal In Heaven

Matthew 6:20 ESV
but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
Mt 6:20
Treasure stored in heaven is eternal and will never fade.
Luke 16:1–9 ESV
He also said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Turn in the account of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’ And the manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do, so that when I am removed from management, people may receive me into their houses.’ So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ He said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ The master commended the dishonest manager for his shrewdness. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.
Jesus encourages the use of our financial resources for heavenly and eternal purposes.
Spend your time on eternal things.
Living righteously
Giving to the needy
Forgive others debts
Luke 14:13–14 ESV
But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”
Loving your enemies
Matthew 5:43–48 ESV
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Witnessing
each soul won to Christ is a treasure.
Micah 6:8 ESV
He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
Matthew 23:23 ESV
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
Micah
Proverbs 11:30 ESV
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and whoever captures souls is wise.
These and many other righteous acts are noticed by and rewarded by God
Righteousness leading to reward was common in rabbinic tradition.
Jesus promised rewards.
Revelation 22:12 ESV
“Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done.
2 Corinthians 5:10 ESV
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
1 Corinthians 3:10–15 ESV
According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.
1 cor 3:10-

Your Heart

Matthew 6:21 ESV
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
This is the point Jesus was making. Our storehouse of treasure reveals where our heart truly is.
We are stewards of all God entrusts to us.
Amassing wealth for the sake of wealth reveals a heart focused on temporary things.
If your trust is in the things you own, it will fail you.
Stewardship reveals our trust in God.
If our heart is focused on the eternal, we live differently.
We live for heaven’s glory

Your Master

Your Focus

Matthew 6:22–23 ESV
“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
If your eye is bad, no light can come in and you are left in darkness
=23
We go wrong when we loose our focus.
Our judgment gets off and misled by our sin nature and the pressures of the world
We need God’s perspective on life.
Our eye should see clearly, it should see God’s way

True Master

Matthew 6:24 ESV
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
This is the point of this section.
We can only have 1 master.
God
Money
There is no room for divided loyalty
If riches hold our affection, we serve money and not God
It directs our actions and informs our decisions.
We live by the code: “What’s in it for me?”
If God holds our ultimate affections, that too informs our decisions
We live for His honor and glory
