1. Get behind the wave that you can’t create .
,
One of the first things I wanted to do when I was in Florida was rent a boogie board, and skim board….yes I am a child…and I like to act like child…..I was more pumped about boogie board than my children were. Well we find some(that we aculty buy because it cheaper) and we get to the beach…..Well if you have ever boogie boared before you know how vital it is to be behind the wave…….Why because the wave is what pushes you forward….the wave is were the power is……And sitting there watching my kids catch the wave he said this point to me and reminded me of ……Wait what Jesus you just died and rose again from the grave and now you are telling us to wait!!! abousltoy why? because you need the holy sprit….HE is your power……Wait what, Jesus wouldn’t it be better if you had you….NO!!! if you think that you don’t understand the power of the Holy spirt…. But I tell you the truth: it is for your good that I am going away..unless I go away the Counselor will not come to you..but if I go, I will send him to you!!!!! …
Church I think their is a temptation today in the American church to create our on wave……Heres what I mean……kids and teens attention spans are ridicules…super short…their is more stimuli now then there ever has been…more distractions…..And for some reason the church has felt the need to compete to culture and the stimuli….by creating rock concert like Sunday morning gatherings, make your on latte in the foror, super new and hip amazing programs….and I am not saying that its all bad….But the most brilliant program and fancy church buildings, and best communicators left without the spirt of God and the word of God are lifeless and dull…..You have and empty shell with no power…..It’s as if own and Gavin would come to me and say hey lets creates a wave….NO church…..john 16:8-11 “When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgement…….” The Spirit is what doesn’t it…Jesus said HE will build his church….stop freakin out thinking the church is not going to be successful…the church can’t fail we just have to remember were the power comes….the power comes from looking around and remembering that God sends a wave….His power…and joining him in it….and being completely depend on him!!!! Side note….if you are scared for working with you because you don’t think you are cool enough…teens don’t need people who are cool…they need people who are spirit filled!
“Let this sink in: The weight of responsibility for the mission does not rest on our shoulders, but on Jesus’ shoulders. He Leads; we follow. He commands; we obey. He supplies; we steward. He delivers; we worship. At our best, we are only unprofitable servant, costing God the bloods of his Son. In other words, our contribution to the kingdom has been net-negative. And for that reason, he gets all the glory.”
Is Christianity more of a set of beliefs to which you adhere and a lifestyle to which you conform, or is it a dynamic relationship in which you walk with the Spirit and move in his power?
2. Live like campsite 150
We pull to our campsite….and while the campsite were reasonably spaced I still could see campsite 150..really well…and I remember being all judgment like….just looking at 150..because the campsite didn’t look real clean….tarp hanging, wood scarred, just looked really busy…which made me think they were going to be loud…and interrupt my vacation……Well the first day went by and I am exhausted after the first day….and I wanted to make a fire and do smores….Well I don’t any fire wood and my wife( who is normally so amazing at planning getting all the food…forgot to by stuff for smores….how does that happen) anyway….all the kids are laying down…its dark…and I here…Hey neighbor! anybody home neighbor!!…I think ooo great campsite 150….I step out and its dark there stood this lumber jack looking guy and his wife…couldn’t really see there face…..And he literally He just starts saying, I felt bad I hadn’t stop by to say hi….we just got back from the community campfire spot…..we brought hot dogs and smores for everyone in the campground……we just wanted to bless everyone and also have an opportunity to share the Gospel..with everyone…then he just goes one to explain to me how he Jesus has transformed his life….I couldn’t get a word out…..was so convicted…..Then he was like well…the real reason I walked over was we have some smores stuff that we want to give you guys left over…and some hot dogs too……Then he was like o and I noticed you didn’t have fire wood…hold up ill be right back…..comes back with not just a huge arm full of really good wood, but I noitced he also had this clear box on top fo the wood…gives me the wood and also just said ooo and by the way I thought you would need these two….and they were really really nice outdoor hanging camplights…that go around your canopy which…I definaly needed…then he talked a little more about Jesus and was gone….boom…I just got served….Just saw Jesus….
Then I was just reminded of …..Let me give you a brief Background to this passage:fast paced, disciple are called, start seeing crazy things, healings(blind, bleading, and dead), oppression, miracles(sea and bread), teaching that is powerful………
Then a pivot happens!!! Jesus bring a paradigm shift……lets look at the passages…..
8:31What did Jesus say….HE was going to die…He says this three times
, : “And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again.”
“He was teaching his disciples, saying to them, ‘The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise.’”
“We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, 34 who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.
“What is not mentioned in each of those texts is why. Mark gives us the clearest statement of that after the three predictions. In , Jesus says, “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Piper,
Jesus gave his life for those whom He would save! ….the word ransom means to set free from slavary…to set us free..This is what God has come to do….And God spoke to my heart then and is still today saying….are you living like that guy…Are you walking into room and thinking what can I get from this? Are you walking into church thinking about yourself? Or are we walking in a way that is constantly wanting to deny ourselves…..I have quote on the back of my phone
3. Don’t loose childlike awe and wonder!
& 51:12
We have so much to learn from children…..I remember the moment we first got to the beach after a super long day of driving we parked and came over the steps and there it was the OCEAN….a great looking sand….Our kids went crazy with wonder and excitement…….they started digging in the sand, jumping in the water…just running around like crazy……I was like a little kid too….just running around…but after the third time to the beach I started to realize how hard it was to walk the sand, how much sand got into everything, how many people were on the beach, might have not had as big as waves, found my self wanting to take more photos……My children on the other hand…..did’t slow down at all….They couldn't’ get over the fact that there was sand and water….to play in….that we are at the OCEAN…Six days straight NEVER GOT OLD…….
reminded me of …One thing to gaze upon your beauty….
I discovered last week listen to a sermon….. that that from the 1950s to the present tense…the dinner plate in America has radically changed! In the 1950s and 1960s the average American dinner plate was nine inches across. So thats like a salad plate now thats like we are just getting started good, like wow whats coming next. The dinner plate was nine inches you could put about 800 calories worth of food on it, if you piled it full of food. By 2000 the average size dinner plate in America was 10 inches across to 11 inches across….And now the average dinner size plate is 13 inches across…Now knowing that made me do what now you are wanting to do which is go home and get a tape measure and measure your plates…..so I did I got my plates out and tape measure…..And currently right now in the Dyas household our dinner plates are exactly 11 inches…..
However I know I have been to some restaurant where the dinner plate is 15 inches across and piled high, so what has happened in the last generation is we are putting more than twice as much food on the plate and over double the calories are going on the plate every time we sit down to eat…… and slowly but surly we have come to see this as normal…What is the result in America…what is different about America now than from 1950….hello any body…yes that right our waistline have increase with the size of of dinner plates….(take a big deep breath this sermon is not about gluttony)…and the reason is our serving sizes have gotten larger our plates have gotten bigger…and so we so we can plop a whole lot more of this and that on the plates…and we even make fun of restaurants where you go and you get a regular sized plate and you get a little bitty portion of food and we say…it was one of those fru fru restaurants where you weren't sure if you were going to be able to survive at the end of the meal….and our mind set has changed…..
When i hear this it made me wonder if the opposite thing has happened to us spiritual that has happened in the natural realm in our lives…it made me wonder if in the last generation our plate if you will spiritual hasn’t gotten larger but has gotten smaller?……… If our sermons haven't gotten more mind stretching they have gotten more simplistic and more readily accessible…because people in a modern world, don’t have time to go up the mountain of God…so we want break it down, put it on a small plate and give me a little portion….and I just wonder over all spiritually in America have we gotten bigger and stronger spiritually in this generation or have we gotten more frail in the last generation…I just wonder if we have gone from a thirteen inch plate down to a nine inch plate…..And our time with God is quick its fast, its instant, its got to be digestible, quickly accessible, super applicable, and I wonder if we are missing out on a opportunity to come up the mountain of God and have our mines blown and our hearts blown with who God is!! (adapted from Louie Giglio Sermon)…..
Nothing combats wonder like hurry and distraction….If you are a Christian remember with me real quick….God saved you!!! :”And you were dead in the trespasses and sins…..8 But God being rich in mercy because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses made us alive together with Christ-by grace you have been saved You were dead God saved you!!! hello…created God…..I think many in the church today need to pray as David prayed:Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and sustain me with a willing spirit. psalm 51:12
Church slow down in your time with God…wake up earlier if you have to….take a walk and look at trees…..Read Calvin, Augustine, Edwards, Spurgeen ….some theology that is going to stretch you and make you wonder……And remember that Jesus said let the little children come to me…..if you don’t receive the kingdom like a child(dependence on him) you can’t do….So lets not rush around lets get bigger dinner plates are marvel again at the things of God!
4. You can’t catch a shark with a ninja turtle pole.
Owen was determined that he could catch a shark…….and do you know what I kept telling him…”Owen you can’t catch a shark with a ninja turtle pole….”Then after saying that so much God reminded me of the devastating story in Number 13-14….Moses send spies into the land…Read some scripture….
John piper in his book, Risk is right—foundational read for me says……
Wrong reasons to risk: 1. Extreme self-denial-work based salvation 2. Self exalting reason…….Now quickly turn back to our story…..What was the results of the people lack of risk?? They died in the wilderness….Wasted lives…..And church God was reminding me, what kind of church are we going to be….Are we going to be the church that see that next steps for our church and while it looks risky and starting a new ministry might be hard…but we are willing to give up m security and comfort to go…..Or are we going to sit? I don’t know about you but there is way more I think God wants to do…and he is just looking for those to say yes…..What is the voice out of your mouth when someone brings an idea up that might seem risky for the sake of the Gospel….do you give them 25 reasons to think worldly about the securyt and comfort?? Or do you serisouly consider that this might be God calling them and you begin to pray with them through it…….Owen lets try to catch a shark with a ninja turtle pole!
5. God doesn’t just work in the sunsets
Longest trip home: -Downtown Nashville, dragging my spare-all I had was a little wrench——-Then getting late in the middle of nowhere Kentucky—-blow a tire——For some reason no tire iron…drive into town….nearest Walmart is forever far away…kids are freaking out…..finally got back but tire..warn down from me draggin it..go slow all the way home…about the time in the middle of all that….probably when this photo was taken….
