As we continue our study in Matthew tonight, we are going to be looking at how we relate to God and how He relates to us. Jesus has finished His sermon on the mount and was traveling back to Capernaum. Great crowds where following Him and His journey was interrupted by a leper. Lepers in Biblical times where untouchable. They where cast out of the cities and had to make it on their own usually by begging. That is the scene for our text tonight
Matthew 8:1–4 NKJV
When He had come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him. And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one; but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”
We see three main points in this interaction with Jesus; worship, prayer, and a touch of the master

The Worship

The Worship

Our text says that the leper came and worshiped Jesus. To worship someone in this culture shows that the man understood who Jesus was, the Son of the living God. We worship God in three ways.

Humility

The Greek word for worship has a sense of prostrating yourself. this man literately fell at the feet of Jesus.
The Greek word for worship has a sense of prostrating yourself. this man literately fell at the feet of Jesus.
we must be humble
James 4:10 NKJV
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
We must remember who we are and who God is.

Sincerity

We must not just go through the motions.
We must not just go through the motions.
God would rather us not worship him than to do it out of obligation or ritual.
Jesus and the woman at the well
John 4:23–24 NKJV
But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
jn
We must worship God from the heart

Reverence

we must remember who we are worshiping
Psalm 29:2 NKJV
Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
The Lord is the only being in the universe that is worthy of our honor and praise.
Exodus 20:2 NKJV
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
Exodus 20:1 NKJV
And God spoke all these words, saying:
Exodus 20:2–3 NKJV
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. “You shall have no other gods before Me.
Exodus 20:2–3 NKJV
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. “You shall have no other gods before Me.

The Prayer

If You are willing

The man asked if Jesus was willing. We must submit ourselves to the will of God no matter what that means for us.
We must submit ourselves to the will of God no matter what that means for us.
James 4:3 NKJV
You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.
james4.3
Jesus healed some and not others, I think about the man who sat at the gate of the temple that Peter and John healed. How many times did Jesus pass by this man? God had a greater purpose for Him and he would receive the answer to his prayer later. What ever God’s will is for us we must accept. When we ask for things in prayer we must do so in seeking God’s will. Our lives are no longer about what we want but what God wants for us.
What ever God’s will is for us we must accept
1 Peter 4:2 NKJV
that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.
1pe4.

You can make me clean

Here is the faith, this man is completely convinced of Jesus ability to heal.
We must be completely convinced of God’s ability to work in our lives
We must be completely convinced of God’s ability to work in our lives
Psalm 147:5 NKJV
Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.
ps147.
We must have faith that God is able to do anything we ask of him. Whether or not He does is not the issue. He can do all things and will provide for us according to His will.

The Touch

To touch a leper in this day in time ment becoming unclean and risk developing the disease yourself. This man had not felt the touch of another person since he was infected.Christ is willing to have us even when when no one else will! we learn two things about God in this passage

He is not afraid of our condition

Jesus was willing to touch the man regardless of his present condition. Jesus is also willing to come in and touch our lives regardless of our sinful state
Jesus was willing to touch the man regardless of his present condition.
Romans 5:8 NKJV
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

His touch makes whole

Jesus was not made unclean by touching the leper because as soon as his hand touched the man, he was cleansed. A touch of the master has the power to cleanse us as well.
Ephesians 5:26–27 NKJV
that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
Eph5.
The touch of the master can change a life. It certainly changed this mans life. If we worship God rightly and pray in faith according to His will, He will touch us as well.
