Introduction

jn 3
John 3:5–8 NIV
Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
The word for wind is the same word for spirit. Think of how God created Adam. He breathed his life breath into him.
When you accept Christ as your savior and Lord you receive the Holy Spirit who indwells (makes his home with you). God lives within you.
5 people prayed to receive Christ last week.

1. Love God and The Holy Spirit will Indwell you. ()

John 14:15–31 NIV
“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?” Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. “All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me. “Come now; let us leave.
john 14:15-31
Love God = If you keep my commands (14:15) and words (14:23)
1 John 5:3 NIV
In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,
you will receive another advocate (14:16)
will live with and in you (14:17)
will be loved by the father (14:21)
will see the Son (14:21)
will be a home for the Godhead (14:23)
John 14:23 NIV
Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.
(just as I have obeyed my Father [14:31])
IL: Moe and I are in the market for a new house that will become our home. There are many houses that meet our criteria:
location
size
price
one-level (kitchen, bedroom, laundry, living room)
But to be a home it needs something that is not seen in the pictures or actual viewings
our stuff
our touch
our people
our pets

A permanent home

Psalm 117:2 NIV
For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord.
Contrast the permanent dwelling with the wilderness wanderings of God’s people.
2 Corinthians 5:6–9 NIV
Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.
2 Cor 5:
Hebrews 11:9–10 NIV
By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

A loving home

John 14:21 NIV
Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

A Peaceful home

John 14:27 NIV
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
peace is not primarily the absence of conflict, but the presence of God and his blessings.

2. Live for God and the Holy Spirit will Defend you. ()

The Advocate - The Spirit of Truth
words from a courtroom
advocate (15:26; 16:7)
testify (15:26)
prove the world wrong (16:8)
sin, righteousness, judgment (16:8)
The Holy Spirit will...
So understand, my children, that two spirits await an opportunity with humanity: the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. In between is the conscience of the mind which inclines as it will. The things of truth and the things of error are written in the affections of man, each one of whom the Lord knows. (T.Jud 20:1-3)

and you also must testify (15:27)
prove the world wrong (16:8-11)
about sin (16:9)

a. He will defend you against rulers and authorities by teaching you what to say.

Luke 12:11–12 NIV
“When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”
The word for witness or testify in Gk is the same word from which we get “Martyr”.
IL: Stephen retold the OT stories that led to Christ.
IL: Paul before Roman judges did the same.
Friends, we need to pray for the worldwide persecution of believers. Hundreds have been systematically killed because of their belief.
This tells us that our human judges are only part of the issue. When we stand with Jesus, he stands with us before the Father.

b. He will defend you against Temptation by helping you stand strong.

Galatians 5:16–17 NIV
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.
1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
Psalm 143:10 NIV
Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.
Galatians 5:16–18 NIV
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
When faced with temptation, reach out to God in prayer and the Spirit will help by giving strength and truth.
IL: Jesus tempted by Satan - he used truth to defeat the temptations.

c. He will defend you against error by teaching you the truth

John 14:26 NIV
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
1 Corinthians 2:11–12 NIV
For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.
1 Corinthians 2:10–12 NIV
these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.

Conclusion

Is the Spirit at home in your life?
Are you allowing the Spirit to teach you?
in tough times?
in temptation?
in the Word?
