Opening and Prayer

God has called us all to missionary work in one way or another. Do you truly believe and trust in what Christ has done for you? If you do, you'll adopt David Livingston's attitude toward missions. There is no room for apathy, excuses, laziness, temporal-mindedness, or lack of priority. We may not all go door-to-door or preach on the street corner. We may not all go to Kenya or China to plant a church. We may not all go to Browning and spread the gospel at the Pow-Wow every July. However, we are all commanded to take the gospel to those in which we come into contact. This is not an option, it is not a suggestion, it is a commandment. A commandment that one can either adhere to or break. There are not excuses. Moses and Jeremiah both tried that. There is either obedience or disobedience. If you do not know how to witness, or how to start a conversation, or how to overcome the lack of boldness or overcome rejection, learn. There are people in this church that can teach these things and even more great lessons on the internet. There is no excuse.

Opening and Prayer David Livingstone was a Scottish missionary and explorer who spent thirty-three years in the heart of Africa. He endured much suffering as he labored to spread the Gospel and open the continent to missionaries. This godly missionary once remarked: “People talk of the sacrifice I have made in spending so much of my life in Africa. Can that be called a sacrifice which is simply paid back as a small part of a great debt owing to our God, which we can never repay?...It is emphatically no sacrifice. Say rather it is a privilege. Anxiety, sickness, suffering, or danger now and then with a foregoing of the common conveniences and charities of this life, may make us pause, and cause the spirit to waver, and the soul to sink, but let this only be for a moment. All these are nothing when compared with the glory which shall hereafter be revealed in and for us. I never made a sacrifice. Of this we ought not to talk, when we remember the great sacrifice which HE made who left his Father’s throne on high to give himself for us.” Source: The Life and Labors of David Livingstone, J. E. give both discipleship and evangelism as well as baptism as the main purpose of mission work. Barnabas was simply following this model. He understood that Jesus had left His ministry behind for us to pick up and finish. We are to fulfill the Great Commission at all cost. The only reason that it doesn't get done is because we simply do not maintain a Spirit-filled heart that wants to do it. Illustration A little boy built a model ship, glued all the pieces together, and worked on it for hours. It was perfect. Every detail was correct, down to tiny sailors standing on the deck. Matthew 28:18–20 NKJV
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Churches are like the real boat; they are only kept in shape by being used. Churches that are preserved and spared use will eventually fall into disrepair. But churches that pour themselves into serving their communities will find energy, calling, passion, and love. "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace" (). "Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (). Application Everything we do should be for the end goal of discipleship and evangelism. Even if you are in charge of cleaning the toilet, do it knowing that it needs to be done so those who evangelize dont have to spend the time doing such tasks. Even if you are not called to go door-to-door or preach on the street, you are called to share your faith with those in which you come into contact! We teach how to evangelize on Thursday nights. We even teach how to defend our faith so we can handle people who reject the gospel. If we as a church were truly about the Great Commission we would be doing it more. Thursday night should be full. The alter should be full of people praying to be filled with the Spirit and praying for God to help us reach the lost. Revival starts with us. Transition

The Team Sent to the Mission Field () Explanation READ AND EXPLAIN PASSAGE Barnabas went to Tarsus to seek out Saul (later Paul) to help with the ministry. The Greek word translated "finding" is a participle which implies that Barnabas brought Paul back the moment he found him. He wasted no time. It could be translated "upon finding him, he brought Paul back." Barnabas went alone and built his team later. Upon building the team, they assembled with the church to teach. The Greek word "assembled" is passive in the Greek showing that God assembled them and unified them with the church for such a task as this. Later the church sent them out as a group. This shows that teamwork is encouraged but not needed. Argumentation Other verses that support this view include: - Paul left Titus in Crete to put things in order. - Stephen ministered alone. - Philip ministered alone. - Peter ministered alone. - Paul ministered alone and was later joined by Timothy and Silas. Heather and I work sort of like Priscilla and Aquila, the husband and wife evangelist team. (; ; ) Illustration Teamwork is like a NASCAR pit crew. Every person has one task and if that one task is not done correctly, the team will struggle. The Jackman has to jack the car up. The tire changer has to get the lugnuts off of the tires. The tire carrier has to carry the tire to the car, pull the old tire off of the car, and put the new tire on the car. The gas man has to fuel it up. The crew chief has to keep the team on the straight and narrow. Application My Pastor, Pastor Mike always had a saying - "Teamwork makes the dream work." That is so true! By finding our Spiritual Gift and purposefuly exercising it in the power of the Holy Spirit every day, we can help each other grow and reach the lost for Christ. The only reason why Christians do not do this is simply because they refuse to walk with God the way they should. If you are truly led by the Holy Spirit, He'll lead you to serve in ways you never imagined before. Conclusion If there is one thing we need to remember from this passage it is that God has a model by which we need to follow Him and minister to Him. We should always scope out the mission field and see what needs to be done. We should select the correct leaders to minister. This leader should have the correct message and the ability to relate to the people. This leader should recruit or teach other leaders to help him in ministry either before leaving or shortly after. While teamwork is not a requirement to start a ministry, it is still a goal that must be met.
Transition However, once the mission field and the mission has been established and a godly, qualified minister has been selected, a team should be formed. Look at vs. 24 IV.
