John 5:1–2 ESV
After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades.
John 5:1 ESV
After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
The Pool of Bethesda was “in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate” (), which places it north of the temple, near Fort Antonia. John gives the additional detail that the pool was “surrounded by five covered colonnades.” During Jesus’ time, the Pool of Bethesda lay outside the city walls.
John 5:
John 5:3–5 ESV
In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
At this pool laid:
Invalids: a person made weak or disabled by illness or injury.
Blind / Lame / Paralyzed
One man has been disabled for thirty-eight years! 13,870 days
Do I hang around weak people?
“Multitude of invalids” - You are a product of your circle!
John 5:6 ESV
When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?”
“When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time”
Very powerful! Jesus already knows!
Do you want to be healed?
John 5:7 ESV
The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.”
John
The sick man’s response was a reflection of his relationship with Jesus.
The question was a yes or no but the man didn’t know who Jesus was.
Instead of answering the question he responds to the question with an excuse!
His excuse was based off his inabillity:
I have no one to put me into the pool and when I do make progress someone steps down before me!
When I am not depended on Christ, it causes me to be depended on myself and others!
John 5:8–9 ESV
Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath.
Jesus heals a man, not because of his faith but because of his inability. Grace! This is me!!!!
John 5:10–13 ESV
So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’ ” They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place.
The man was healed / Delivered from his condition but he didn’t have a relationship.
John 5:14–15 ESV
Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.” The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.
Jesus found him in the temple
“See, you are well”
“Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.”
The man went away (After instructions) and told the Jews it was Jesus who had healed him!
