LAST WEEK
LAST WEEK
We looked at a very challenging text
A text that has been misunderstood by many
A text that has caused many to walk away from Christianity
But a text, that when taught correctly, levels the playing field
It causes all of humanity to understand the nature of their identity apart from God
We also looked at 3 things that lead to a poor spiritual life
Paul said in
SLIDE: ROMANS 1:21
That they knew God
But, they did not glorify Him as God
You can know God on the surface, but not know Him personally
The difference is, how you worship Him
Do you worship Him in Spirit and in Truth
Do you sing to Him
Do you serve Him
Do you give him your first fruits
DO YOU GLORIFY HIM AS GOD
IS HE YOUR MAIN MAIN REASON TO LIVE?
One way you will know is in your Thankfulness towards Him
The Romans gave into their sinful desires
All while knowing God
But never glorifying him
Nor being thankful towards Him
Your Thankfulness matters
It speaks to a deeper reality
If you are Thankful for what He has done, and you Glorify Him in the good and the bad, because you know Him and are known by Him
Then you will prevent yourself from being Futile, Aimless in your thinking
You will also prevent your hearts from being darkened.
You won’t profess to be wise in foolishness
But you will have the mind of Christ
You won’t worship the creation, but the Creator.
IT WAS A VERY SIMPLE, YET STRONG EXHORTATION FOR ALL OF US TO KNOW OUR PLACE IN THE STORY OF GOD’S KINGDOM.
THIS WEEK
THIS WEEK
WE WILL LOOK AT A VERY REAL CHARACTERISTIC OF GOD
SOMETHING THAT HE ALONE IS WORTHY OF DOING
IT DESCRIBES TO US THE CHASM THAT EXISTS BETWEEN US AND HIM
BUT IT ALSO MAKES THE SACRIFICE OF JESUS THAT MUCH MORE VALUABLE.
SLIDE: WHY DO WE JUDGE PEOPLE?
Most of the time we judge, because the odds are in our favor.
We judge because in our minds our sin seems a bit less powerful than theirs
We judge because somehow it makes us feel a little better about ourselves
We judge because we have failed to examine our own spiritual state
We judge because we misunderstand the Gospel
SLIDE: Comparison is the platform from which we judge.
The Gospel has a different mantra
In , God gives Paul insight to the Roman culture, and exposes the judgmental heart
In turn he asks us to Check Our Heart
Romans 2:1-
1 Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. 2 But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things. 3 And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: 7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, 9 tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; 10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God.
SLIDE: ROMANS 2:1
SLIDE: Who is Paul speaking of in the beginning of Chapter 2?
SLIDE: EVERY HUMAN BEING EVER
WE ARE INEXCUSABLE
CHRISTIANS ARE NOT EXEMPT FROM THIS TEXT
REMEMBER, PAUL IS WRITING TO ALL OF ROME
ROME, BELOVED OF GOD
CALLED TO BE SAINTS
CALLED TO HOLINESS
SAVED AND UNSAVED
TRYING TO MANIFEST THE DIVINE POTENTIAL THAT THEY SHOULD TAP INTO
HE SAYS
WE ARE WITHOUT EXCUSE
WE HAVE NO REASON TO JUDGE
PAUL CLARIFIES THIS
For in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself
You that Judge the Adulterer
You that Judge the Heterosexual Sin
You that judge the Homosexual Sin
“You that judge someone else’s sinful nature”
In doing so, “you are also condemning yourself”
“For we who judge, practice the same things”
SLIDE: SO HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND TO SOMEONE ELSES SIN?
SLIDE: WE SHOULD ALWAYS RESPOND WITH THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
SLIDE:
‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live.
SLIDE:
The Lord your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
The New King James Version. (1982). (). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.
SLIDE:
who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
SLIDE:
THAT HE IS WILLING THAT NONE SHOULD PERISH, BUT THAT ALL SHOULD COME TO REPENTANCE
SLIDE: THAT GOD DOES NOT DELIGHT IN THE DEATH OF THE WICKED.
Some of us right now, are thinkning
“But I don’t sin like that”
“I don’t cheat on my wife”
“I don’t envy anyone”
“I haven’t killed anyone . . . yet”
These thoughts are the reason why Paul wrote this
We have the tendency to compare our sinfulness to others
For some reason, our sin always looks less grievious
Until we realize that our sin, no matter the sin, or the quantity, is equal to any breaking of God’s Law.
10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.
This scripture is so important to understand and memorize
Why?
Because it tells us we are not better and no worse than anyone else
We are as sinful as everyone else
We need Jesus just like everyone else
The Gospel is our greatest need
THE MORE WE KNOW THE GOSPEL
THE MORE WE KNOW OUR NATURE
THE EASIER IT WILL BE TO UNDERSTAND VERSE 2-4
2 But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things. 3 And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?
2 But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things. 3 And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?
2 But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.
SLIDE: ROMANS 2:2-4
GOD’S JUDGEMENT IS NOT BASED ON SOME EVER CHANGING TEXT
GOD’S RIGHTEOUS JUDGEMENT IS ACCORDING TO TRUTH
Truth that we are sinners and He is Holy
Truth that because of our Sin, God sent his Son, to die on the cross, on our behalf
Truth that those who don’t believe in Jesus, and who are active practitioners of sin
Will be judged accordingly
Because of their lack of knowledge
Because of their passive lifestyle
Because of their complacency concerning the Gospel
The Truth about God, which is found in the Gospel
And also found in the invisible
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,
Will convict them
The Truth will either keep you enslaved to sin, or it will set you free.
AFTER HEARING THIS, YOU CAN DO TWO THINGS
THIS TRUTH CAN EITHER CREATE AN URGENCY TO SHARE THE GOSPEL, OR IT CAN CREATE PERMISSION TO JUDGE
THIS IS WHY PAUL SAYS WHAT HE SAYS IN VERSE 3
Do you think, that just because you judge people
Do you think, that because you know right from wrong
Do you think, that because you know they messed up
You are allowed to judge them?
Again, you are as guilty as every other sinner on this planet.
Again, the Gospel should be your go to.
“Brother/Sister look man, you probably feel like you messed up pretty bad, though that may be true, what is also true is that Jesus still loves you, and the Bible says that He is faithful and just to forgive you of your sins, when you admit you messed up.”
It is that easy my friend.
SLIDE: :4
If we choose judgement over the Gospel
We miss out on giving someone something that they cant purchase.
We miss out on the blessing of restoration
We miss out on the blessing of forgiving others
We end up despising the riches found in His Goodness
We miss out on the grace, clemency, and tolerance of God
We miss take advantage of his longsuffering
Not knowing that His Goodness is what leads us to repentance.
CHURCH, WHEN SOMEONE SINS AGAINST US, WHEN SOMEONE IS IN UNREPENTANT SIN, WHEN SOMEONE HAS NEGLECTED THE RICHES OF THE GOSPEL, THE FACT THAT THEY ARE STILL ALIVE MEANS THAT GOD’S GOODNESS IS STILL TRYING TO LEAD PEOPLE TO REPENTANCE.
INSTEAD OF JUDGEMENT, LETS LEAD WITH THE GOODNESS OF GOD.
INSTEAD OF JUDGEMENT, LETS LEAD WITH THE GOODNESS OF GOD.
THIS MAY SOUND LIKE A MEER SUGGESTION
BUT IT IS ACTUALLY A SPIRITUAL BAROMETER.
ROMANS 2:5
PAUL IS GIVING US A STRICT WARNING
BUT WAS PAUL TRIPPIN’? OR WAS HE RIGHT IN BEING THIS HARD ON PEOPLE WHO JUDGE?
SLIDE: LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT JESUS SAID CONCERNING JUDGEMENT
36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.
37 “Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.
47 And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.
JESUS IS SETTING THE BAR HIGHER FOR US
HE ALSO PRESENTS HIMSELF AS THE SOLUTION FOR THE JUDGMENTAL PERSON
39 And Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind.”
Because of how unjustly we Judge
Because of how often we judge
Because of how we Judge
Jesus came into this world
That those who are blind to their judgmental hearts
Would see
And that those who think they know it all
May be blind
SLIDE: ROMANS 2:5-6
THE ISSUE WITH JUDGEMENT IS THAT OUR HEARTS ARE WICKED AND WHO CAN KNOW THEM
OUR HEARTS ARE DECEITFUL
FROM OUR HEARTS COME FORTH CURSING AND BLESSING
PAUL SAYS
BECAUSE OF THE HARDNESS AND IMPENITENT HEART
You are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath
For unto you it will be revealed the righteous judgement of God
Then you will know, that you had no business judging people.
One day we will give an account
One day He will render to each of us according to our deeds
God is in the business of saving people.
He saves people, through saved people.
THOSE WHO COME TO FAITH HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY
THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BELIEVERS AND UNBELIEVERS
But not only that, the more people have the potential to be saved
