We have already looked at the point of life, Christianity, school, college.
Now we look at another very important topic.
What’s the point of dating?
Again we must answer this question within the context of the bigger picture. If we get the big picture messed up we will miss the mark in all areas of life.
The point of life is to love God and make disciples of all nations based on His love.
Proof text:
You already know where we are going, but we will keep on plugging them.
There is no other point to life, thus we need these verses to be a reality in our life.
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Thus we can conclude the point of life is to love God through the finished work of Jesus and share this truth with the entire world, making disciples of those that receive the gospel.
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Based on this, what would be the point of dating?
To have some arm candy?
To impress people?
For companionship?
Because we are lonely?
For pleasure?
Because he/she is cute?
Say it with me… of course those aren’t the point.
The sole point of dating is finding a soul mate.
That is it…
You need to get this.
The biggest downfall among young people is dating relationships.
God does not intend for you to share yourself with anyone and everyone who will give you attention.
He made you for one person and he made one person for you.
I wish that I had know this as a young person.
I tried to get into a relationship with girls because we thought each other were cute.
As a result I unintentionally gave out pieces of myself to girls that had no business receiving my affection.
Think about it, do you want your future husband/wife to be giving themselves to someone besides yourself.
24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Genesis 2:24
God has called man to a covenant relationship with our soulmate, no one else.
All of that said, dating is not bad, it is actually essential to help you find the person that God has made for you
A few qualifications before entering into a dating relationship.
Are they saved?
14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
15 and what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
2 Corinthians 6:
If they aren’t saved you have no business dating the.
Missionary dating does not work
It is too easy for you emotions to overtake you and mess around and fall in love with a lost person.
While this may seem harmless at first, over the course of life it will manifest itself as being a major problem.
Will you raise your kids in church? etc…
Are they following Jesus?
If they aren’t following Jesus then you will have a hard time being on the same page
If following Jesus isn’t a priority to them now then there is a pretty good chance they wont be in the future.
Without going into too much detail on this, one of the major points of marriage is to be a ministry team.
If they aren’t following Jesus then you will have a hard time fulfilling the mission in marriage.
If they aren’t following Jesus then how could you expect your kids to have a desire to follow Jesus?
Think BIG picture with dating, not the here and now.
Now that we know the only person we should settle for is someone who is saved and following Jesus with their life, let’s see how God brought Adam His soulmate.
15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Genesis 2:15-
God gave Adam a mission
To dress and keep the garden
Side note: God gave Adam the Word
Eat whatever you want except for the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
18 And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him.
Genesis 2:18-
God tells Adam it would be good for you to have a companion to help you accomplish the mission.
Again to keep the garden.
19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.
20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a help meet for him.
Genesis 2:19-
God does something very interesting.
God assigns Adam a task
Notice: Super Important… Adam is doing what God called him to do.
Adam cannot find a soul mate based on what He has been searching for.
21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22 and the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
Genesis 2:21-
Now God brings Adam his bride.
God knew exactly what Adam needed so He made Eve specifically for Adam.
Key principle: You don’t have to go looking for a spouse, as you are busy accomplishing the mission God will bring you the person He made for you.
This is incredibly freeing, as you are living out what God has called you to in life, He will bring you into a right relationship.
In conclusion: Fall in love with Jesus first, He will give you a heart for the mission and his people. Over the course of time, as you are in your mission field, He will bring the perfect person into your life to help you accomplish the mission together.
