Names: we all have one.
Names: we all have one.
1 As they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them,
2 being greatly disturbed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
3 And they laid hands on them and put them in jail until the next day, for it was already evening.
4 But many of those who had heard the message believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.
5 On the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem;
6 and Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of high-priestly descent.
7 When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire, “By what power, or in what name, have you done this?”
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people,
9 if we are on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well,
10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by this name this man stands here before you in good health.
11 “He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner stone.
12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
Why are names important? Who here knows what their name means? (allow time) Mine Means “Who is like God?”
We don’t think about it today the same way that they did in biblical times. In Biblical times a name was something inseparable from the person to whom it belonged. It represented something of their essence, who they were, or the circumstance into which they were born. We see a clear description of this in
32 Leah conceived and bore a son and named him Reuben, for she said, “Because the Lord has seen my affliction; surely now my husband will love me.”
33 Then she conceived again and bore a son and said, “Because the Lord has heard that I am unloved, He has therefore given me this son also.” So she named him Simeon.
34 She conceived again and bore a son and said, “Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore he was named Levi.
35 And she conceived again and bore a son and said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing.
We see here that four people, Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah, were named after their circumstances.
God’s proper name is YAHWEH, and this name comes from the verb “to be”. Meaning that He has existed, Exists and will always exist, ETERNAL.
14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
Other names God goes by in the OT is Lord of Hosts: Jehovah-Jireh(the Lord will provide); Jehova-Tsidkenu(the Lord our righteousness); Jehovah-Nissi(the Lord my banner); Jehovah-Shalom(the Lord is Peace); Jehovah-Rapha(the Lord heals) and the List Goes on!
So when we look at our Key verse What is the Name Peter is talking about? (give time) JESUS
Have we stopped to consider what His name means?
In He is called Immanuel
14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.
This means what? GOD WITH US
This was not only a declaration of trust, it was promise from God.
Since in Isaiah the coming Christ is called Immanuel, why is it that Jesus is named Jesus?
20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
21 “She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
“For He will save His people from their sins”. Because of what Christ has done, that work has saved His people. More than just that, Christ’s amazing work on the cross has reconciled us to God, and because of that reconciliation, God not only Dwells with us, His people, but by His Spirit indwells us.
See, prior to Jesus incarnation, God set up a system of animal sacrifice with His covenant people of Israel, where once a year they would offer up an unblemished lamb for the forgiveness of sin. This unblemished lamb would die and people of Israel would be atoned for for another year…
But when we look at that , was it sufficient, or just temporary? It was temporary.
1 For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, make perfect those who draw near.
1 For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, make perfect those who draw near.
IT WAS NOT ENOUGH
I
It was only a foreshadowing of things to come, the One to come.
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not open His mouth;
Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.
We read here the Christ will be like a lamb led to slaughter
In The Holy Spirit reveals to John the Baptist that Jesus is the lamb of God, the final sacrifice offered up for all, for the forgiveness of sins. After Jesus’ death on the cross, there was no other sacrifice necessary for the forgiveness of sins.
What does this mean for our text today?
Peter and John are arrested for teaching the people the Gospel, proclaiming the Gospel. Just before preaching, Peter healed a man who for his entire life could not walk. He healed him in the name of Jesus.
6 But Peter said, “I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—walk!”
The man walked!
Peter continued to preach and explain to them from who the power to heal came from, in who’s name it was, Jesus.
16 “And on the basis of faith in His name, it is the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all.
v.8-12 again.
“Just as the name of Jesus was the only hope for physical healing of the man crippled from birth, so also the name of Jesus is the only hope for the spiritual healing of mankind. This exclusive and total reliance upon Christ for salvation is the clear teaching of both Jesus and the apostles (; ). See theological note “Salvation” on p. 2058.”
Why is this important? Why are the different names of God and Christ so important. Why is there power in the name of Jesus?
It’s not simply the name, but who stands behind the name, who gives that name meaning. It is by the sacrifice of Christ that there is power in His name. It is because God is faithful to fulfill His promises that we are here today. It the Sacrifice of the PERFECT LAMB OF GOD that forgives us. It is Jesus perfect life that afford us righteousness before God, His death on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins, and His resurrection that afforded us eternal life.
Brothers and sisters, we are to think about this everytime we hear the name of Jesus, every time we here the name God. All these amazing things that were done for our reconciliation and for God’s glory.
If you are here today and have not believed in the name of Jesus and his death on the cross for the forgiveness of sins, cease the day, you’re never too old, you’re never too young. Repent of your sins and pray to God who reaches down to pull you out of spiritual death. The God who by His son has reconciled those who believe to Himself through His son Jesus Christ!
