Introduction

In life, so many different things can happen that can cause to react out of our feelings rather than respond with wisdom. Many times it is easy to point the finger and blame THEM for what THEY made us do. Though things and people have the power to influence the way we feel, nothing or no one has the power to make us DO anything. In this series, we will discuss the importance of owning your emotions and reactions. We will look at characters in scripture that that allowed their circumstances to get to them and ended up having to face certain consequences.
Question: Have you ever improperly reacted to a situation because of what THEY did? What are some things people allow to get to them that causes them to react? What were the consequences of these actions?

Read

Cain allowed his jealousy to get to him and killed his brother for it. When we allow things to get to us, we commit murder. Cain wasn’t born a murderer. He only became one when he allowed his situation to get to to him. Though none of us may have physically murdered anyone, we can commit murder with our words and our actions.
What are some ways we commit murder ever day?
The name of the series is "Don't let it get to you." In life, things and people will do things that may make us feel certain ways. However, though situations may cause us to feel disappointed, hurt, angry or frustrated, we must not allow these situations to get to us. We must not blame our reactions on what THEY did. We must take ownership of how we respond to situations. Although God will deal with the part THEY had to play in a situation, God is not going to hold the other person responsible for how you react.  For this series we will be looking at characters in Scripture that allowed situations to get to them and had to pay the consequences.

SCRIPTURE: KEY POINTS - Because Cain allowed the situation to get to him, he murdered his little brother. When we allow situations to get to us, we commit murder. We murder our relationships, friendships, relationships and opportunities with our words and actions. - Before Cain killed his brother, God asked him a pivotal question: "Why are you angry?" Before we allow things to get to us, we need to step back and take an inventory of why we feel the way we feel. For Cain, he was the cause of the situation, but because of his emotions he couldn't see the part he played in Abel's offering being more favored by God. Cain didn't give God his best, but he just gave God a "whatever" offering. Before we get upset we need to interview our feelings. Are you upset because you wanted them to be Jesus for you? Are you upset because things didn't happen the way you wanted them to? Are you upset because someone did something better than you when you didn't give it your best? Are you upset because you are disappointed? Why are you angry? Our feelings, whether good or bad always tells us more about us than THEM.  - Because Cain killed his brother, he had to deal with the consequences. How many lethal words have you said to someone where now you have to live with the consequences? There are so many people that are in jail and that have to live with a lifetime of consequences because of their reactions to what THEY did. Whether its emotional, mental, spiritual or physical. Don't be a murderer. Don't be Cain. Don't let it get to you.
