We continue with our series on the fruits of the Spirit by examining the related themes of patience and kindness – – which both describe the manner in which we deal with others around us.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
I) Patience
I) Patience
I) Patience
A) When we understand the definition (long-tempered), it becomes clear what this involves – – suffering without anger at the actions of others
When we understand the definition (long-tempered), it becomes clear what this involves – – suffering without anger at the actions of others
As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
Yet, lack of patience is rationalized to be acceptable by many, even disciples of Christ
B) Timothy imitated this from Paul – ;
C) God has shown the perfect (complete) patience with mankind – ; ; – as each of us should understand about ourselves –
Timothy imitated this from Paul – ;
You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness,
so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
God has shown the perfect (complete) patience with mankind – ; ; – as each of us should understand about ourselves –
D) Is temper out of our control? – – not unless we deny the power of God
What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction,
because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.
And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him,
But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.
Is temper out of our control? – 2 (esp v.11) – not unless we deny the power of God
E) Our patience will become un-limited when we give ourselves fully to the Spirit of God –
And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.
Our patience will become un-limited when we give ourselves fully to the Spirit of God –

A) This term has usefulness as its root meaning, with an implication that it derives from the moral character – – yet no one is useful (good) in God’s sight
This term has usefulness as its root meaning, with an implication that it derives from the moral character – – yet no one is useful (good) in God’s sight
B) God’s actions for man define this term – ; – in saving us through His Son
All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
no one does good,
not even one.”
God’s actions for man define this term – ; – in saving us through His Son
C) Kindness and severity of God (salvation and condemnation) are set in contrast for Jews and Gentiles – – to show that both are consistent with His character
so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
III) Connected usage of both terms
Kindness and severity of God (salvation and condemnation) are set in contrast for Jews and Gentiles – – to show that both are consistent with His character
Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.
A) We must not take the patience and kindness of God lightly – – especially regarding the patience and kindness we show (or not) to others
III) Connected usage of both terms
III) Connected usage of both terms
We must not take the patience and kindness of God lightly – – especially regarding the patience and kindness we show (or not) to others
B) All of this is possible only in the new man – – which will affect every aspect of our lives – vs.12-17
Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.
C) Paul uses himself as an example of this life –
All of this is possible only in the new man – – which will affect every aspect of our lives –
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Paul uses himself as an example of this life –
Concl: When the Spirit of God leads us, we will not let temper keep us from being useful to one another, but instead will patiently serve each other for their good.
but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love;
Concl: When the Spirit of God leads us, we will not let temper keep us from being useful to one another, but instead will patiently serve each other for their good.
