David & Goliath

When it comes to this particular Scripture, there is not enough time to receive all the truths from it. We will attempt to draw out the broad biblical truth from it tonight.

TRUTH: Jesus is our warrior that fought in our place & defeated our enemy.

Subtruth: Jesus extends His victory to us through faith in Him.

God used a teenager in the Old Testament, an account we’re all familiar with, to do the impossible to foreshadow the saving work of Jesus on the cross.

Q - How many times have we come to the conclusion in a situation that we need to be the best person we could be?

We listen to people tell us: “You are all that you need to be the best.” “You can do anything you put your mind to!”

“You are all that you need to be the best.”

Isn’t that what the account of David & Goliath is about? Nope. In the account of David & Goliath in , we discover so much more than just the feel good children’s story. This isn’t a “self-help” story for us. Most of us know the story. The story goes a little something like this:

“God helped David kill the giant with three stones and a slingshot. Just like God helped David do the impossible, God will help you too.”

That is accurate. As a child, that’s the accurate age appropriate truth. But! Not entirely what the account of 1 Samuel shows us and what it’s truly about. David & Goliath is about much more than a teenager with three rocks and slingshot communicating to use that God helps us defeat the giants in our lives.

Here’s what we need to know: 1) We are not David 2) Goliath isn’t our giants 3) Jesus was the one that fought for us on the cross 4) Goliath is our greatest giant - sin & death

Sin and death ruled by Satan is our real enemy, not Goliath.

Summary of 1 Samuel 17:

Philistines and Israel were at war. Both armies were one both sides of a valley. Goliath, a 9-foot man, taunted king Saul and Israel. David comes from shepherding the sheep and accepts Goliath’s challenge to fight. David does so “in the name of the Lord God.” Goliath falls and Israel invades the Philistines, David runs and grabs Goliath’s sword & cuts off his head and brings the head and sword back to Jerusalem. The command of the army said, “Whose son is this youth?”

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

I. Jesus is The Warrior that fights in our place.

Most of us know the story. The story goes a little something like this:

“God helped David kill the giant with three stones and a slingshot. Just like God helped David do the impossible, God will help you too.”

Right before the climax of the story, David says it, “Let everyone know that the LORD saves for the battle is the LORD’s.”

That is accurate. As a child, that’s the accurate age appropriate truth. But! Not entirely what the account of 1 Samuel shows us and what it’s truly about. David & Goliath is about much more than a little dude with three rocks and slingshot.

The battle that we are engaged in is much bigger than we could ever think. Our battle isn’t against tough life situations, but with power of sin, death, & Satan.

Here’s what we need to know: 1) We are not David 2) Goliath isn’t our giants.

The battle was never David’s in the first place. It was Jesus’ battle to fight. Not only fight, but to fight for us.

I love what Goliath said in

1 Samuel 17:8–11 ESV

8 He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why have you come out to draw up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. 9 If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.” 10 And the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel this day. Give me a man, that we may fight together.” 11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

1 Samuel 17:8-

Goliath said, “If he is able.” When I read and prayed over this passage that caught my attention. Of course! OF COURSE JESUS IS ABLE!

II. Jesus is The Warrior that defeats our enemy.

1 Samuel 17:

1 Samuel 17:55 ESV

55 As soon as Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I do not know.”

1 Samuel 17:48–51 ESV

48 When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David. 51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

LETS GO! This is foreshadowing Jesus coming and defeating the enemy on the cross and triumphing over Him in His resurrection.

In Jesus’ victory:

We are offered salvation from God’s wrath and God forgives our sin >>through the cross & resurrection only<<

The condemnation of sin is cancelled.
