I. INTRO
A. Where We’re Headed
a. Intro Fam.
1. Mike & I served in NAVY 2gether
i. Mike…do u remember the sailor’s creed? - it starts:
-I am a United States Sailor. I will support & defend the Constitution of the United States of America & I will obey the orders of those appointed over me.
*Obey, why:
~mission is completed cause we obey
~obey out o duty, honor, & respect
b. 2day, going 2 talk about obedience…frm an even higher motivation than out o duty, honor, & respect
B. Main Text
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,
13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing,
15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,
16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,
13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing,
15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,
C. Prayer
D. Context
a. vs 12 starts w/the word therefore: in light o all I’ve said
1. Starts out describing humility
3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Phil 2:
2. Humility: making much o others & less o urself
b. Then He tells us that this is Jesus’ ex. for us:
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Phil 2:5
1. Jesus even though equal w/God, didn’t clutch to his equality
i. instead he humbly obeyed God to death & was a servant to all!
2. In-light of this
i. Though we are equal to all, obey!
II. BODY
A. Like Jesus, humbly obey (obey who?)
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,
a. Obedience to Jesus first
1. Paul expects that, regardless of his presence, the Philippians will maintain obedience to Jesus
i. Jesus said it this way in:
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
1. Paul expects that, regardless of his presence, the Philippians will maintain obedience to Jesus
b. Obey our leaders Also
Obedience to Jesus first
1. the context is Paul’s expectation that they will heed his instruction as well
i. Besides, Church leadership isn’t a group o pwr-hungry bullies, obsest w/having their way (@least not here)
1. Paul is suggesting that regardless o if he is w/’em or in a jail sell they would obey Jesus & leadership
- Church leadership is a gift from God for our wellbeing!
2. regardless o if we r
i. gathered 2gether Sunday/Tuesday/spec. events or
ii. @ur job, hanging out w/friends&fam…whatever ur doing
-U & we would obey both Jesus & our leadership which Jesus says is a gift from Him to us
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,
12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
ii. Church leadership is a gift from God for ur wellbeing!
c. Obedience is submitting even when no one is watching
1. Paul is suggesting that regardless o if he is w/’em or in a jail cell they would obey Jesus & leadership
2. regardless o if we r
i. gathered 2gether Sunday/Tuesday/spec. events or
ii. @ur job, hanging out w/friends&fam…whatever ur doing
-U & we would obey both Jesus & our leadership which is a gift from Him to us
iii. Why obey?
B. Obey because we love
a. Jesus clearly said if we love Him we’ll obey Him
1. Our obedience to Jesus is motivated by our love for him,
i. not our duty
ii. not his position as king o kings
-but our love!
b. We obey our leaders because we love them
1. b4 we dive in2 that, can I say this: the leaders o GMCC love u!!
i. They serve tirelessly not because they have to, but because they love u
-they aren’t obligated to serve here; they GET TO serve you in leadership
ii. This is why Paul served the Philippians “therefore, my beloved”
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,
-Like Paul to the Phil. , the elders, deacons, min. heads & I... love u!
iii. Intro Leaders:
-Elders:
*Tim
*Brian
*Grace
-Deacons
*Paul H. - Head Deacon/Grounds

*Aaron S. - Men’s Min
*Rebekah B. - WOW
*Ray & Andrea T. - Hospitality
-the term here though “beloved” is a term used of mutual love
2. Paul is reminding the Phil. not only that he loves them, but they love him also!
i. My sincere hope is that as much as we love u... u love us also & so submit to our leadership
-not because we’re charismatic
-not because o obligation/duty/honor
-not because we always get it right
*but because u love us as we love u
ii. Illust. Navy (respect the rank) followed the orders o my 1st LPO (awful leader)
-Loved LPO OS1 Johnson
C. Obey by working out
a. Work out our salvation
1. Not works salvation
i. Work out our salvation: wrestle w/what salvation in our context looks like
2. Work in out with fear & trembling
i. fear:
- not simply “fear” of His pwr & righteous retribution,
-but a wholesome dread of displeasing Him
not a mere “fear” of His power and righteous retribution, but a wholesome dread of displeasing Him
*Illust. like a son afraid of displeasing his daddy & desperate to make him happy
ii. trembling:
-literally to quak
iii. Not simply “what does following Jesus look like 4 me”
-instead WE ask, “what does following Jesus look like 4 US”
*Paul isn’t talking to A Philippian, but 2 THE Philippians
iv. So, WE r 2 figure out what it looks like 4 US 2 follow Jesus, not flippantly, but w/shaking, quaking dread o making our daddy in heaven unhappy!
-How r we to become certain that we r not displeasing our heavenly daddy?
b. Work it out with God
13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
Phil 2:13
1. In short, partner w/God who works in us to develop the desire & devotion to act in ways that please him!
i. Partner w/God as we search scripture 2 see the ways that God is calling us to please him
ii. Partner w/God as we pray…asking him, how do I act in this/that situation
D. obey by working with joy & peace
grumbling: private discourse of displeasure/complaining
