Obedience of John
Obeys in spite of doubt
“I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”
Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?”
-In , John is in prison for standing against Herod. He as been obedient, even in the face of persecution. At this point in his life, John is in prison because of his faith. He was obedient in spite of his doubts.
2. Obedience of Jesus
a. Jesus obeys the father
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
-Obedience results in humility.
3. Obedience of Baptism
a. Baptism of the Spirit
-seals believers with the Holy Spirit
-Proof of Salvation
b. Believers Baptism by Immersion
-step of obedience
-public profession of your faith
-Doesn’t symbolism completion or perfection, but a new life and a new beginning
-The greatest tool/proof of who God is, is our testimony.
4. Obedience provides evidence
a. Directly through God Himself
b. Through Fruits of the Spirit/Life Change
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Galatians
By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.
