Waiting for Pentecost

Acts 1:6–8 ESV
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
acts 1:
Acts 1:3–11 ESV
3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
Jesus is raised from death, he appears to his disciples. He proves to them that he is alive, and shows them how the OT scriptures point to him - in the law, the history books, the Psalms and the Prophets.
The disciples won’t have the grace or power to preach the gospel unless they are first plunged into the Holy Spirit.
Once they have received the Spirit they will be able to preach the Gospel not only in Jerusalem, but in the rest of Judea, among their old enemies the Samaritans and to the whole world.
The disciples were not to begin the witness yet - only after they had been empowered by the Holy Spirit.

The Waiting Room

Before the Day of Pentecost, however, there was to be a time of waiting, for 40 days between the resurrection and the ascension of Jesus. And 10 more day till the Pentecost. So 50 days waiting.
Luke 24:49 ESV
49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Acts 1:4 ESV
4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;
The Bible Guide Jesus Is Taken up into Heaven (1:3–11)

The disciples still misunderstand ‘the kingdom of God’. They still expect Jesus to declare himself as a military leader who will defeat the Romans and restore the kingdom of Israel. For Jesus, the kingdom of God isn’t a little political state of Israel, but a worldwide spiritual realm.

we don't like the waiting room or hidden seasons we get anxious, nerves . But it’s there you prepare your self, you feel like your whole life is under construction.

The Misunderstanding of the Mission

Acts 1:6–8 ESV
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1:6–7 ESV

For Jesus, the kingdom of God isn’t a little political state of Israel, but a worldwide spiritual realm.
This is the gospel the apostles are to go out and preach.

Empowerment of the Holy Spirit

Acts 1:8 ESV
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Just as the Spirit came upon Jesus to equip him for his public ministry, so now the Spirit was to come upon his people to equip them for theirs.
The disciples were not to begin the witness yet - only after they had been empowered by the Holy Spirit.
During the waiting period, however, they were not inactive. Luke register 4 important events.

During the waiting period, however, they were not inactive. Luke register 4 important events.
1) they received their commission
2) they saw Christ go into heaven
3) they persevered together in prayer, presumably for the Spirit to come
4) they replaced Judas with Matthias as the twelfth apostle

Stop Looking and Start Acting

Acts 1:9–11 ESV
9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
Don’t waist time gazing into heavens!
Why do you stand looking into heaven don’t worry He’s coming back .
