Have you ever tripped someone?
Have you ever been tripped?
If you were running a race that was really important to you and one of your best friends tripped you while you were running how would that make you feel?
Why would you never do that?

Stumbling Blocks |
As a strong / weak Christian what is my responsibility to the rest of the body / my other brothers / sisters in Christ?
How should I seek to go about performing / fulfilling these responsibilities to the body?
Prayer
Prayer
God will you please convict us where we need conviction, restrain us where we need restraint, free us where we are bound, and grant us grace and mercy in your patient lovingkindness as we struggle through our own personal walks with you. God help us to understand and embrace the truth found in your word of individual salvation and personal relationship along with the truth of the mutual body of the Christian Church and the connectivity and responsibility of all believers to one another. God I ask for us today that you will break strongholds of legalism and licentiousness in our lives and our church and that you would foster unity based upon knowledge practiced in love

13 Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. 14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15 For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. 16 So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. 20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. 21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. 22 The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.
Rom 14:13-15
We effect one another
Paul says we all do this, Stop!
play on words = pass judgement / decide
Nothing is unclean unless you think so = meaning?
stumbling block / hinderance = actively or passively - cause to sin
Christian liberty / loving responsibility
brother = christian
Paul says we are guilty of passing judgement on each other and needlessly causing others to stumble in their faith of small / inconsequential issues!
V14 = Nothin unclean unless you think so… what does this mean?
it does not mean that nothing is sinful if we believe it in our hearts to be ok
homosexuality
abortion
it does mean that even though as Christians we are free, if our consciences convict us we are bound by them
drinking alcohol
smoking
gambeling
head covering / dresses
translation of the bible
V15 = It
16 So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men.
Rom 14:
We need our priorities straight
What God calls clean let none say otherwise...
if you regard as clean do not allow them to call it unclean
Yet… The Kingdom is more important then your freedom
if you reguard as unclean
V17 = what is really important?
V18 = we are to serve Christ first… by doing so we are acceptable to God…
19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. 20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. 21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble.
Rom 14:
We must help each other grow
Pursue = peace / edification
Strong = grow in love
Weak = grow in knowledge
Destroy the work of God… !!
millstones / lies
self / selfless
22 The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.
Rom 14:
We must not force our opinions on others
V22 = What this is / is not saying…
do evangelize / do study / do teach / do discuss
don’t force your conscience on others
when we try to wear others consciences we will sin
1 We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. 3 For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.” 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. 5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6 that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.
Rom 15:
We do this by:
Preferring Others
we are obligated because of Christ
Pursuing knowledge in love
the weak are not to remain weak but rather welcome training, edification, and instruction
the strong have the obligation to bear with, train and love the weak seeking to instruct them
through God’s Word & Prayer
Remaining vigilant
personally and corporately that we are not swept away by small incongruincies
personally and corporately that we are given to unity
Preferring selflessness
