Introduction

Jesus is now in Jerusalem for his final week before his sacrifice for the sins of His people.
He has made a public spectacle - in the temple
Cursed the fig tree
They question his authority and he appeals to his baptism, when he points to John
The parable of the Tenants

They come to trick Jesus “Paying Taxes”

They- sanhedrin
Pharisees and some Herodians
“Trap him” refers to catching an animal in a snare or hooking a fish. The word implies deceit
verse 14 flattery was employed, everything said was true with the wrong motive
Head tax or census poll same amount for both rich and poor. The Tax was hated not really so much because of the amount but because the coinage used bore the image of the emperor an offensive inscription
Knowing their hypocrisy * why do you put me to the test (test or tempt) They fact that they had a coin in their possession showed they recognized the authority of the emperor demonstrating their hypocrisy.
Whose likeness and inscription is this? On a typical coin of the time one side read, “Tiberius Caesar, son of the divine Augustus and the other side said “high priest”
Render means here mean to give what is owed. Give to Caesar’s what belongs to him and Render or give to God what is owed to HIm. Jesus simply affirms that obedience to a secular power does not always conflict with our obligation to God.

Tripping up with Marriage and the Resurrection

The Sadducees came to him- They are thought to be derived from that of Zadok, a high priest in David’s time () They had emerged as an identifiable party during the late Maccabean times. Politically they were quite willing to cooperate with the authorities of the Roman Occupation in order to preserve their favored position. They rejected the oral tradition of the law, that I’ve taught on earlier in Mark. They completely denied resurrection of the body, they denied the existence of angels and other spirits. They party of the Sadducees were destroyed in 70 AD when Rome wiped them out.
verse 19 They are pulling from the law in which Moses said in -5-10 what should happen if a man died without a male heir, his brother would marry his wife and impregnate her so that his brother’s name might be preserved and his property kept within the tribe and family.
Verse 24 Jesus asks a counter question, Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God. They had no idea to properly interpret scripture nor had they experience the power of God in their lives. This is a common problem even today. Please call themselves christians or spiritual people, yet they do not know the scriptures nor the power of God in their lives. God wills for every one to know him, we all should know the scriptures and how to properly approach interpretation of them. We should be experiencing the power of God in our lives.
Twice before Jesus taught that resurrection life will be different from earthly life. (3:31-35 and 10:29-30) People will not marry and have children. In some sense we will be like the angels concerned only with serving and worshiping God. This does not mean we wont have joy and benefit from meaningful relationships with friends and family members because we will as marked in new life as God’s family. We will all be brothers and sisters in the new kingdom.
verse 26 everlasting life is what we are promised. For those who are in Christ, we shall live forever. This concept must be on your mind and it produces joy. Here Jesus says how God spoke to him saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, he is not the God of the Dead but the living.
Many people believe when we die thats it.. Nothing. Others have made up their own imagination of what heaven or the afterlife will be.
Most Cultures have embraced the concept of afterlife
The source of Truth, speaks a lot about the afterlife.. Do you know what the bible actually teaches?
Possibly wrap up and recap with points

The greatest commandment

The scibes has identified 613 separate commandments 365 of which were Negative and 248 of which were positive.
Important and less important
Jesus quotes the Shema - this was recited twice a day by the jews.
