14. A ‘social’ interpretation of these verses is confirmed by the indictment of complaining or arguing, the sins which stained the shield of the people of God in the Old Testament (cf. Exod. 16:7; Num. 11:1).
When we complain and grumble, we are telling those around us that we believe God is doing a very poor job, and, if given the opportunity, we could do much better

The verb become, genēsthe, is more precisely ‘show yourselves’
