Commissioning the Church

1. Jesus Was Sent by the Father

John 4:34 ESV
Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.
John 5:24 ESV
Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
John 5:36–38 ESV
But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent.
John 5:36–37 ESV
But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen,
John 3:16–17 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
John 3:16-
John 5:
The Mission of Jesus
The Mission of Jesus was a God-initiated saving mission. He forgives sins, by his free-grace.
-Not
The ongoing mission of Jesus was not to teach people how to be good and to love one another. The mission of Jesus was not to help us have a better life, or 10 steps to get to God.
-He came to testify to the truth.
John 18:37 ESV
Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
John 18:
His mission was to show us who God is, and to show us what we are.
We are
John 8:34–37 ESV
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you.
John 8:34–35 ESV
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever.
John 8:42–44 ESV
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
John 3:16–19 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
John 3:16–18 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
John 8:33–34 ESV
They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
We were Perishing, condemned, lovers of darkness.
John 8:
Who God Is
John 14:8–11 ESV
Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
His actions show he was God
John 20:30–31 ESV
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
His Death Shows His Divinity
John 8:28–29 ESV
So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.”
John
That’s why he called on people to believe in himself
John 12:44–45 ESV
And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me.
John 12:44 ESV
And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me.
has something to say about sin and his reason for coming.
perishing, condemned, love darkness.
So Jesus came to testify to the truth and to reveal himself as God, and to die for our sins so that we would put our faith in him and be saved.
John 5:24 ESV
Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
-Provide Salvation for All People
Read John 3:13-17
This offer is made for all people/s
fulfillment of prophecy
-He Came to Secure the salvation of His Elect
John 6:38–40 ESV
For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
John 17:1–8 ESV
When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.
John 17:1-
John 17:18–21 ESV
As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
John 10:16 ESV
And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.
John 10:16 ESV
And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.
He has sheep from all nations

2. Jesus Sends The Church

“even so I send you” GET THE EMPHASIS
They are taking Christ’s place, serving in his stead… Not as savior, but as messenger. Truth-teller. Witness.
It is with authority that Jesus sends the Church. It’s not by human authority that the Church carries out her mission, but with the same authority that Jesus carried out by his mission.
We are called to bear witness of Jesus in his place.

who hath conferred on men so high an honour, as to make them the ambassadors and deputies of God, and of his Son, in declaring the forgiveness of sins.

2 Corinthians 5:18–20 ESV
All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
This is the whole Job of the whole Church. Lead by Apostles and Elders

The Empowering of the Church

We ought to cry out, “Who is sufficient for these things”
“breathed on them”
Same as:
Genesis 2:7 ESV
then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
-This was a foretaste of what was to come.
John: A New Covenant Commentary Appearance and Empowerment (20:19–23)

The task of bearing witness to Jesus would be impossible for the church without the power of the Holy Spirit (John 15:26–27; cf. Acts 1:8).

the Spirit was given to the Apostles on this occasion in such a manner, that they were only sprinkled by his grace, but were not filled with full power; for, when the Spirit appeared on them in tongues of fire, (Acts 2:3,) they were entirely renewed.

God empowers his by sending the Spirit to enable her mission.

The Authority and Jurisdiction of the Church

Forgiveness, remitting and retaining.
The Church is commissioned with the authority to forgive or retain sins?
This is her jurisdiction, this is the sphere of her influence.
-Not through confession or penance.
Same as Matthew
Matthew 16:19 ESV
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Binding or Loosing.
John: A New Covenant Commentary Appearance and Empowerment (20:19–23)

For the Jews, “binding and loosing” expressed the activity of a judge who declared persons innocent or guilty and thus “bound” or “loosed” them from the charges made against them. Similarly, the Spirit-filled community has authority to judge people, a function inherited from Jesus (5:27; cf. Isa 22:22).

-Make judgments, authoritative declarations
This authority was possessed by the apostles, “let all the house of Israel know.”
Acts 2:36 ESV
Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
They were messengers with an authoritative declaration.
This declaration was your sins are forgiven. (radical statement)
So now when the Church preaches the Gospel (The message of the Apostles) that message has the same authority.
When we preach the gospel it is an authoritative declaration of divine pardon.
This is our authority and jurisdiction. We are sent to proclaim a message.
Application
We don’t seek to win people’s approval, we’re not court jesters there for the approval of the world, we are messengers like Nathan the Prophet standing before David declaring “Thus says the Lord.”
We don’t seek to win people’s approval, we’re not court jesters there for the approval of the world, we are messengers like Nathan the Prophet standing before David declaring “Thus says the Lord.”

Luke 24:46–47 ESV
and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
Luke 24:
John 11:50–52 ESV
Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
John 11
John 11:51–52 ESV
He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.

John 11:49–52 ESV
But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
Jesus died for the Children of God scattered abroad.
Not just one group but all people groups.

We Are All To Be Involved

This is the Whole Job of the Whole Church, and we do this together!
We do this each week when we meet together. (You are joining in.)
You pastor is your primary missionary.
Not necessarily all go or preach. We endeavor to spread the Gospel faithfully.
Pray
Ephesians 6:19 ESV
and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel,
Ephesians 6:18 ESV
praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,

3 John 3–8 ESV
For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are, who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God. For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.
