Trust God and You can’t lose

This psalm flows out of David's experience recorded in 1 Sam. 21:10-15.

It must be remembered that David had been anointed king of Israel, 1 Sam. 16 and he had been doing everything right. Now he was fleeing from King Saul. While things may not have made sense to him, in fact, Jonathan had to convince him that Saul was out to kill him, he still trusted in the Lord.

So this psalm is about trusting in God even though the things happening in your life may lead you to think God is absent.

To help us to see this the psalm is an acrostic with each verse beginning with the next letter of the alphabet. However, between v.6 and 7 (hebrew) but v.5,6 in english, the letter vav is left out. Therefore, the last verse stands alone calling attention to itself.

This then is the thrust of the Psalm:

The Lord redeems the life of His servants and no one who takes refuge in Him will be condemned/suffer punishment for wrongdoing.

In other words no one who runs to God and hopes in Him will lose out.

The psalm doesn't say that the righteous will not have troubles (v. 19 many are the afflictions of the righteous. Yet the Lord delivers them from all of them.), but that God will get them through it. In other words, God is there every time we are in trouble.

So, in light of this truth, what do we do?

I. Praise the Lord at all times, 1-3

      James 1

II. Pray to God in your trouble, 1-10, 15-21

Believing that:

            A. He will supply your need, 1-10

            B. He will hear your cry and rescue you, 15- 21

            C. He is near you when you are brokenhearted and humble, v.18

III. Practice righteous living despite your trouble, 11-14

Conclusion

Trust God no matter what happens in your life!
