Madman to Mission man.

Intro:
2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB95
17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
II Conrinthian
This story today is about a man possessed by demons, not only possessed, but tormented and over powered.
His life changed when he met Jesus. We will look at his life, see the change and he desire to be with Jesus and to tell others about Jesus.
We can learn a lot from this man. If you are saved, you have been delivered. You need to serve by sharing what Jesus has done for you with others.
This chapter shows us the great power and compassion Jesus had for this man and as He ministered in various places around Capernaum.
There was no need too great or too small that Jesus cannot met. Everywhere Jesus went He transformed lives.
For the believer, each of the accounts recorded in paint a beautiful picture of the transformation that has taken place in us.
We have been set free from the bonds of sin, healed of our iniquity, and delivered from eternal death and condemnation.
We are to live like Jesus, be the light of the world, showing those who are lost the way to salvation.
Look at this story today and not look at not verse by verse, but look at the verses that go his life and his change.
As we look at these verses, we will see how Jesus can change the life of anyone, “Your one”

I. The madman.

The madman

Mark 5:3 KJV 1900
3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
Mark 5:3 NASB95
3 and he had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain;
1. We must understand that this wasn’t just a place he spent some time, but this was his dwelling. He spent his days among the dead. (Making his home in grave yard)
a. There a lot of homeless people in Gainesville. Grace market place. tents in the woods all over the place. But, I’ve never seen any tents set up in a grave yard. If there was, what would you think of them?
b. His life pictures those separated from God in sin. They are spiritually dead and have no fellowship with those who are alive in Christ.
c. They are literally dwelling among the dead in a spiritual sense. Praise God that is you are saved you no longer live among the dead, but dwell in the land of the living.
e. Lost people, lost souls, may not look and act like this man, but they are still spiritually dead.
2. “no man could blind him, not with chains” In Matthews account, he was so violent, that no one would even pass by him.
a. Sin makes a person helpless, and there is nothing anyone can do for themselves and that anyone else can do for them, in their own power.

The Madman

His desperation
Mark 5:4 KJV 1900
4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.
Mark 5:4 NASB95
4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.
“often times” In many instances, Constantly.
a. People, somebody had tried to tame this mans with chains and shackles.
b He broke the chains, shackles, no body was strong enough to hold him down.
c. No doubt he lived a life of despair – sadness, lonely, rejected. The torments of life never ceased.
d. People today seem to love living a sinful life. But I believe that many are depilatory looking for somethings.
e. They find real joy through Jesus. No more loneliness, but fellowship with other believers through Jesus.
f. Nothing the world can do will fix a sin problem.
Mark 5:5 KJV 1900
5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
1. Day and night the pain and misery of life was upon him. He found no comfort or peace, only despair and desolation.
a, So Many around us today are in the same desperate situation. I don’t know any who dwell in the cemetery, but they live in despair.
b. Their lives are dominated by sin – drugs, alcohol, sexual addiction, etc. Every day begins the same as the day before – in despair.
c. They find no way of escape and continue to live in defeat. This man lived a tragic life, as many do today. They have no hope, joy, peace, or comfort, constantly searching for a way to escape the pain and suffering.

The Madman

His desire
Mark 5:2 KJV 1900
2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
Mark 5:2 NASB95
2 When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him,
Mark 5:6 KJV 1900
6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
1. He dealt with circumstances beyond his control, (we can’t handle sin in ourselves), but he must’ve longed for the day that the suffering would end. There was a day that he caught a glimpse of hope; he saw Jesus!
a. Can you imagine the scene? He has lived in torment among the tombs, but one day a small boat arrives. Something within him knew Jesus was his only hope. I don’t know if the man knew Jesus, but the demons inside certainly did. – the devils also believe, and tremble. Whatever the case, he is found at the feet of Jesus, worshipping Him.
b. Our world is filled with those who are in pain.(Your neighbors) We may never see or know, but their pain is real. They looking for a means to escape their desperation. Jesus is the way!
c. We should have a desire to meet with Jesus. We have to have a desire to share Jesus with them.
c. We have to have a desire to share Jesus with them.

II. The Master

Jesus is the master.

The Master

His Presence
Mark 5:1 KJV 1900
1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
1. It’s interesting to note that Jesus did nothing else while in Gadara.
a. We don’t find Him teaching in the synagogue, feeding multitudes, or healing their sick. He came through the storm on Galilee to reach this lost sinner.
b. That one lost, wretched soul needed a Savior and Jesus showed up in his hour of need.
c. Do you remember when you were saved? Some may have been saved VBS, are a revival service, youth meeting, with many others. Billy Graham
d. But some of you may have been saved because someone cared enough to share the gospel of Jesus with you.

The Master

His Preeminence
is Preeminence
Mark 5:7 KJV 1900
7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
Mark 5:7 NASB95
7 and shouting with a loud voice, he said, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!”
1. As Jesus appeared that day, the man immediately knew this was the Son of God. He was aware that Jesus was there and that He possessed all deity. Clearly the demons had no desire to worship Jesus, but they too acknowledged His deity.
Our world is filled with those who are in pain.(Your neighbors) We may never see or know, but their pain is real. They looking for a means to escape their desperation. Jesus is the way!
a. That is what is required if we are to be saved and set free from the bondage of sin. If you have never recognized Jesus for who He is and your need for Him, you must do so.
b. He is the only way to be redeemed and given eternal life. We must come to the place that we realize we need Jesus. We must see ourselves as unworthy before Him.
c. If you live a life controlled by sin, you’re helpless within yourself. Jesus, however, can bring victory to your soul. He has the power to cleanse your heart, forgive your sin, and redeem your soul.
d. If Jesus possessed the power to save this man, (He did), I know He can save you! He forever defeated sin on the cross of Calvary. Jesus has the power to release you from the bondage of sin if you will only trust Him.

The Master

Mark 5:

III. The Miracle

What a difference Jesus makes when He passes by. This is the same man, that a few moments before was a maniac, living among the tombs, desperate for a change in life. In a moment’s time he went from complete despair to eternal deliverance.

The Miracle

His Power VS 8-14
Mark 5:8 KJV 1900
8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
Mark 5:8 NASB95
8 For He had been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”
Here is man that no one could tame. But the power of Jesus is going to change him. They don’t leave right away.
Mark 5:9 KJV 1900
9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
Mark 5:9 NASB95
9 And He was asking him, “What is your name?” And he said to Him, “My name is Legion; for we are many.”
a Roman legion consisted of 6000 soldiers.
Mark 5:10–13 KJV 1900
10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. 11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. 12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. 13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.
Mark 5:10–14 KJV 1900
10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. 11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. 12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. 13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea. 14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.
Mark 5:10
Mark 5:10–14 NASB95
10 And he began to implore Him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now there was a large herd of swine feeding nearby on the mountain. 12 The demons implored Him, saying, “Send us into the swine so that we may enter them.” 13 Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea. 14 Their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the country. And the people came to see what it was that had happened.
Mark 5:10–13 NASB95
10 And he began to implore Him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now there was a large herd of swine feeding nearby on the mountain. 12 The demons implored Him, saying, “Send us into the swine so that we may enter them.” 13 Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea.
1.Not going to get to why pig, this is one of those things that there are many different explanations. What is important is the change in this man when he met Jesus.
a.
b. If you live a life controlled by sin, you’re helpless within yourself. Jesus, however, can bring victory to your soul.
c. He has the power to cleanse your heart, forgive your sin, and redeem your soul. If Jesus possessed the power to save this man, (He did), I know He can save you!
d. He forever defeated sin on the cross of Calvary. Jesus has the power to release you from the bondage of sin if you will only trust Him.

Mark 5:14 KJV 1900

The Miracle

Mark 5:15 KJV 1900
15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
His Conversion: This was the same man who had brought terror to all who knew him. He had dwelt among the dead, but now he has been changed. The Lord made all the difference in his life. Let’s see what the Lord did for this man.
His Comfort – He is found sitting with Jesus. He is no longer running among the tombs. He is no longer desperate for peace in his heart. He is no longer tormented by the demons and effects of sin. If you are living life on the run among the dead, Jesus alone can provide the comfort you need. You can come to Him and sit at His feet.
His Clothing – He was sitting, and clothed. He was no longer running among the tombs naked and unclothed. He was dressed and presentable.
a. There is a profound truth in the fact that the man was clothed. The point here is that there was a change in the man that was noticeable for those who knew him to see. The Lord had done a work on the inside and it was visible from the outside.
His Comprehension – He was sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind. Meeting Jesus affected the way this man thought.
a. His mind was no longer controlled by Satan. He no longer desired the things of the world or the pleasures of sin. His mind was focused on the Lord.
c. An encounter with Jesus will change your thought processes. You will no longer question or deny the power of the Lord. Your thoughts will no longer be on the things of the world or the lusts of the flesh, but on the Lord.

His Commission

Mark 5:18 KJV 1900
18 And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.
Mark 5:18 NASB95
18 As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was imploring Him that he might accompany Him.
The man no longer wanted to live alone, but desired to go with Jesus. He wanted to be with the One who had brought deliverance. Jesus had another plan for him. He was to go and tell what had happened in his life.
Mark 5:19 KJV 1900
19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.
Mark 5:
Mark 5:19 NASB95
19 And He did not let him, but He said to him, “Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.”
M
Mark 5:20 KJV 1900
20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.
Mark 5:20 NASB95
20 And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed.
