1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. 5 For each will have to bear his own load.
Have you ever been restored in a spirit of gentleness? What did that look like?
Restore. Always with the understanding and the goal of restoration. Katartizo. It is a medical term for putting a bone back into place. Dislocation, back where it belongs.
This helps I think because when you set a bone or put a joint back into place that is what is behind it. The bone belongs here, the joint belongs back in the socket.
Does anyone hate the Dr for pointing out that a bone needs to be set or put back into place? The dr is placing it where it belongs.
This is important because too often we focus on the fact that, “you don’t have the right to tell me I am doing something wrong” But the most loving thing is restoration.
But then Paul addresses something in the second part of the verse “Keep watch on yourself lest you too be tempted”. None of us is above sin.
not only that remember that The key action is “to restore,” which is different from “rebuke,” “ridicule,” “humiliate,” “chastise,” or “dominate.”
There is no joy or satisfaction in pointing our someone else’s sin.
The key action is “to restore,” which is different from “rebuke,” “ridicule,” “humiliate,” “chastise,” or “dominate.”
Why? ____________ because we are included as sinners. We know, we should say, I understand, let me help you
When it comes to restoration Paul really does a great job reminding us how this is done and why this is done.
We are no better than any one else. v2-3
So there are two different ways we can handle a situation where a brother or sister in Christ has been caught in a sin. There is no mistaking it. It is out there. What do you do?

2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. 5 For each will have to bear his own load.
2 Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. 3 I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. 4 You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. 5 For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.
What does bear one another’s burdens mean? Be involved, help.
This has to do with how we treat one another in the household of faith. Our brothers and sisters in Christ
We don’t want to be ogres pointing the finger, our aim is to restore, humbly, lovingly.
Always remembering that we need grace too. We are sinners too.
We have some chores in the house.
Tuesday is trash day. It is the responsibility for the boys to bag up the trash all around the house and take it out.
Many times they forget. Let’s just call that a sin. We have told them what to do and they forget, all the time.
I have to come up with a plan to bear this burden. What might that look like?
Live in Liberty: The Spiritual Message of Galatians (Study Guide) Chapter 22: The Truly Spiritual Life
If you believe God expects good works from you as the basis of your relationship with him, you will expect good works from others. If you believe God accepts you by grace, you will be able to show grace to others. Think about the relationships in your life. What do they show that you believe about that?
We are no better than any one else. v2-3
The Grace God gives us is Grace that we share with others.
