Introduction:
One of my children asked me recently asked me what I do at the church besides Preaching? I shared with them I’m someone who’s usually a part of families going through different life situations…whether wrestling with the loss of a loved one or when a family member has the Good News of a Birth. Or key moments to pray with them when they’re hurting and when they’re celebrating...
I love to serve in difficult times....but there’s nothing like Good News....
The Gospel = Good News
The Gospel = Good News
How is the word gospel defined? The Greek term euangellion, which translates to “good news” or “glad tidings,” occurs seventy-six times—forty-eight of these occurrences are in Pauline epistles, and ironically only twelve are in the Gospels. The Exegetical Dictionary of the New Testament says, “In contrast to the usage in the OT and Jewish and secular Greek literature (“news of victory” or “recompense for a good report”...) εὐαγγέλιον [euangellion] in the NT denotes the news that concerns God or comes from God.” It is also “a technical term for the message about Christ” (H. R. Balz and G. Schneider, Exegetical Dictionary of the New Testament [Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 1990], 2:70).
