Galatians (2)
THE CONCERN OF PAUL
Galatians 1:6–12
The prompting of this epistle was Paul’s concern about the Galatians’ departure from the simple Gospel message to one that included keeping the law as part of salvation.
1. The Marvel in the Concern (Galatians 1:6)
“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel” (Galatians 1:6). The rapidity with which the Galatian converts were seduced by false doctrine astonished Paul. The rapidity shows the craftiness of the false teachers. Also it shows that Satan does not waste time trying to undo the work of God. Where God has done a significant work, Satan soon shows up to try and undo it.
2. The Matter of the Concern (Galatians 1:6,7)
The matter or issue which so concerned Paul was twofold.
• The perverting of the Gospel. “Unto another gospel” (Galatians 1:6). The Gospel message had been perverted. We learn later the perversion was to add the works of the law to the requirement to be saved. This perverting of the Gospel began soon after the early church began (Acts 15). Legalists tried to make salvation of both works and faith. We have many today who have the same theology. Any theology that requires one to do good works or be baptized or circumcised or be a church member to be saved is legalism and is condemned in Scripture.
• The perturbing of the Redeemed. “That trouble you” (Galatians 1:7). The true Gospel of Jesus Christ brings tranquility to mankind. But the perverted Gospel disturbs. The word translated “trouble” means to “disturb with various emotions such as fear” (Zodhiates). Only the true Gospel will bring peace to the heart. A Gospel that includes works often causes men to fear they have not done enough good works to be saved or to keep saved.
3. The Malediction in the Concern (Galatians 1:8,9)
A strong malediction is placed upon those who preach a perverted Gospel.
• The cause of the malediction. “Though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:8). Preaching a perverted Gospel is what brings down a malediction upon one. Thus many ministers and others will experience this malediction.
• The character of the malediction. “Accursed” (Galatians 1:8,9). We get our word anathema from the word translated “accursed.” The malediction involved Divine condemnation, the worst kind of condemnation anyone can experience.
• The crowd for the malediction. “We, or an angel from heaven … If any man” (Galatians 1:8,9). Paul does not leave out anyone from this malediction. Not even angels are exempted. They must be faithful to the Gospel message just as any man is to be faithful to the Gospel message. Anyone, angel or human, who deviates from the true Gospel message is Divinely accursed.
• The confirming of the malediction. “As we said before, so say I now again” (Galatians 1:9). Paul repeats the malediction to confirm its truth and emphasize its reality and severity. Do not pervert the Gospel message or a Divine curse awaits you.
4. The Message in the Concern (Galatians 1:10–12)
Here Paul addresses the fact of the true Gospel message and how he received it.
• The speaking of the message. The fact of the proclaiming of the true Gospel message is in focus here. First, the motive in the speaking. “Do I now persuade [seek approval of] men, or God? or do I seek to please men?” for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10). Paul’s motive in preaching the Gospel was not to please man but to please God. He further states that if his motive had been to please men, he would not be a true servant of Christ. The principle here will expose much so-called Christian service as not being service for Christ. Second, the manner of the speaking. “Preached” (Galatians 1:11). The word translated “preached” is the word from which we get our English word “evangelize.” Paul preached in a manner to turn people to Christ.
• The source of the message. “Not after man … neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ” (Galatians 1;11,12). Three things can be said about the source of the message. First, it was not the invention by man. “Not after man.” If man could have thought up the Gospel, he would not have done so because it so condemns man. If man wanted to think up the Gospel, he could not have done so because it takes the genius of God to plan and put into effect the Gospel. Second, it was not the influence of man. “Neither received it of man, neither was I taught it.” Paul did not get the Gospel message from man. He did not learn it from the apostles or from Gamaliel the great Jewish teacher or from any other human. Third, but it was the informing by Christ. “But by the revelation of Jesus Christ.” Paul got the Gospel message straight from Jesus Christ. He received an untainted message, an unpopular message, but a powerful message.
