Choose Wise Companions
Choose Wise Companions
Someone once said, “Show me a man’s friends today, and I will show you what he will be tomorrow.” God says it a little more strongly:
He that walketh with wise men shall be wise:
But a companion of fools shall be destroyed.
2 Samuel 13
Go from the presence of a foolish man,
When thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.
The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way:
But the folly of fools is deceit.
Prov 14:
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”—.
I have watched many good young people be destroyed because of bad company. So to increase in wisdom, select wise companions. Review the definitions of wisdom and of the wise man. It is better to be alone than to develop friendships with fools.
“Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.

Be able to identify a foolish person and avoid him.
You may be tempted to say, “But isn’t that judging someone?”
God has commanded us to flee from the presence of such a one. He has also provided us with a detailed description of the characteristics of the foolish man: “The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way.”
God expects us to choose friends based on outward evidences of their wisdom—and to avoid them if they display the characteristics of a fool.
Below is a list of the characteristics of the foolish man as found in the book of Proverbs.
Why is it hard for us at times to leave bad friends ?
would you have the courage to leave them?

Here, “perverse” means distorted or crooked. He does not have the integrity to tell a story without distorting the facts with the bias of his own agenda.
Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity,
Than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

A foolish person talks a lot of foolishness.
A foolish person talks a lot of foolishness.
Earlier we defined a foolish man as someone who has been taught the Bible but refuses to submit himself to its precepts.
Listen to those around you who regularly attend your church, your youth group or your Christian school.
.
Mark those who make it a habit to criticize the Bible standards of separation from the world, who scoff at the preaching and who make fun of those who are trying to live by the Word of God.
A prudent man concealeth knowledge:
But the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.

The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright:
But the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.
The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge:

A foolish person is contentious.
A foolish person is contentious.
He is always looking for an argument, always looking for a fight. This person doesn’t seem to be able to be happy unless he has caused some kind of contention. He does a lot of damage in a church.

And his mouth calleth for strokes.
My teenage friend, you must become wise enough to choose the right companions!
The warning of God is very clear: wise companions will help make you wise, but foolish companions will destroy you.
As you review the above list, it is always good to start with yourself. Are there foolish attributes that have become habits in your own life? Then confess these to God. Ask Him to help you behave wisely in all things.
Then examine those with whom you spend most of your time. Be honest with yourself.
A teenager once told me, “No one has a right to choose my friends for me.” I beg to disagree.
God has every right to teach you how to select wise companions. By the way, the young lady who made that statement no longer goes to church. Her “friends” influenced her to stop attending church, to stop going soul winning and to stop serving God.
She is now involved in an immoral, ungodly lifestyle. It is now tomorrow, and she is now what they are.
Stop here and review the nine biblical steps to increase in wisdom. Schedule your time and discipline your life so that you will begin now to make each of these a regular part of your week.
Congratulations! You are on your way to achieving the ultimate goal of the Christian life. You are on your way to becoming like the teenage Christ.
