A Blessed Home

How did people know that the house of Obed-edom was blessed?
No.
All that was in possession of him was not taken away.
And Scripture emphasises why his house was blessed: “…because of the ark of God”.
If he were then there would not be a blessing to the home of Obed-edom who housed the very instrument used by God.
Note that Scripture emphasises the purpose behind Obed-edom being blessed: “…because of the ark of God”.
How can we have a blessed home today? What does a blessed home look like?
Obeying what the Lord has commanded
How should the home be run? What are the roles of husband and wife, what are the roles of parents and children?
Some simple roles found about the house are:

Husbands

Providing for the household
1 Timothy 5:8 KJV 1900
But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
1 Timothy 5:7–8 KJV 1900
And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless. But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
1 Timothy 5:1–8 KJV 1900
Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity. Honour widows that are widows indeed. But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God. Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day. But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth. And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless. But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
Love your wife
Colossians 3:19 KJV 1900
Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
1 Peter 3:7 KJV 1900
Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Fathers

Provoke not your children to wrath
Ephesians 6:4 KJV 1900
And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Colossians 3:21 KJV 1900
Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.

Parents

Wives

Proverbs 20:7 KJV 1900
The just man walketh in his integrity: His children are blessed after him.
Honour husband
Ephesians 5:22 KJV 1900
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Build your house
Proverbs 14:1 KJV 1900
Every wise woman buildeth her house: But the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.
Michal in our passage despises David for his actions seeing it rather as exhibitionism rather than joyous worship.
2 Samuel 6:16 KJV 1900
And as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal Saul’s daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart.

Mothers

Love your children, love your husband
Titus 2:4 KJV 1900
That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

Parents

Training
Proverbs 22:6 KJV 1900
Train up a child in the way he should go: And when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Discipline
Proverbs 29:15 KJV 1900
The rod and reproof give wisdom: But a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
Proverbs 23:13–14 KJV 1900
Withhold not correction from the child: For if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, And shalt deliver his soul from hell.
Proverbs 29:17 KJV 1900
Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; Yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.
Proverbs 22:15 KJV 1900
Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; But the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Children

Obedience
Ephesians 6:1 KJV 1900
Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
Proverbs 4:1 KJV 1900
Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, And attend to know understanding.
Honour your parents
Honour your parents
Proverbs 23:22 KJV 1900
Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she is old.
Ephesians 6:2 KJV 1900
Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)

Michal Despises David

In the context of this passage when Michal despised David she held him contempt or disdain. It would be the exact opposite of what Scripture states for a wife to hold her husband in honour.

How can wives despise their husbands?

Don’t fulfil their role within the home
Don’t support or help their wife

What would be a remedy if a wife finds herself despising her husband?

Note there’s no reconciliation with Michal, the passage here ends:
2 Samuel 6:23 KJV 1900
Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.
There’s a continued loss of intimacy and the longer you continue to despise your husband the harder it will be to turn back.
Ephesians 4:26 KJV 1900
Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
And it’s the same for the husband too, don’t get bitter against the wife.
Colossians 3:19 KJV 1900
Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

What new information do we find about this attempt to take the ark?

David had prepared a tabernacle for the ark to reside, we aren’t informed of this in the first attempt
:
2 Samuel 6:17 KJV 1900
And they brought in the ark of the Lord, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.
1 Chronicles 15:1 KJV 1900
And David made him houses in the city of David, and prepared a place for the ark of God, and pitched for it a tent.
2. David assembles the children of Aaron, and notice who is mentioned first - Kohath, why is this important?
Numbers 4:15 KJV 1900
And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.
And why are the sons of Merari mentioned?
Numbers 4:29–33 KJV 1900
As for the sons of Merari, thou shalt number them after their families, by the house of their fathers; From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth into the service, to do the work of the tabernacle of the congregation. And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation; the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and sockets thereof, And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name ye shall reckon the instruments of the charge of their burden. This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tabernacle of the congregation, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.
And why are the sons of Gershom mentioned?
Numbers 4:
Numbers 4:24–27 KJV 1900
This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, to serve, and for burdens: And they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tabernacle of the congregation, his covering, and the covering of the badgers’ skins that is above upon it, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, And the hangings of the court, and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and all that is made for them: so shall they serve. At the appointment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burdens, and in all their service: and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burdens.
And why are the sons of Elizaphan mentioned?
Numbers 3:30–31 KJV 1900
And the chief of the house of the father of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel. And their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister, and the hanging, and all the service thereof.
Numbers 3:
And the sons of Hebron and Uzziel?
Numbers
Numbers 3:27–28 KJV 1900
And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izeharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the Kohathites. In the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were eight thousand and six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary.
3. He orders the priests to be sanctified.
There are several mentions in Scripture when Aaron is asked to be sanctified when approaching the Lord.
Exodus 40:13 KJV 1900
And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.
Leviticus 8:12 KJV 1900
And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron’s head, and anointed him, to sanctify him.
Leviticus 21:8 KJV 1900
Thou shalt sanctify him therefore; for he offereth the bread of thy God: he shall be holy unto thee: for I the Lord, which sanctify you, am holy.
Leviticus 21:7–8 KJV 1900
They shall not take a wife that is a whore, or profane; neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband: for he is holy unto his God. Thou shalt sanctify him therefore; for he offereth the bread of thy God: he shall be holy unto thee: for I the Lord, which sanctify you, am holy.
4. David sacrifices to the Lord when the Levites went 6 paces
It’s implied here that upon that first move of 6 paces that sacrifices and offerings were offered. It appears the confirmation of the first 6 steps David knew the Lord was well pleased and David therefore sacrifices
