Now we move on to what’s the point of a job.
Here’s what the world would say is the point of a job.
to make lots of money
to gain power
to start a career path
to climb the corporate ladder
Of course non of these are biblical. These are simply man trying to give a point and purpose to life.
If you take away career goals, etc... then it is quick to see that it is all meaningless.
The real question we must ask is…
How does a job fit into the context of the point and purpose of life?
How does a job fit into the context of the point and purpose of life?
The point of life is…
The great commandment and great comission
If your life has no purpose then your job will very quickly lose purpose and the daily grind becomes frustrating and meaningless.
Let’s start with a few principles regarding work.

8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

1 Timothy
8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
Unless you are a stay at home mom or have some extraneous issue then you’ve got to work.
Thus a job is essential.
Following Jesus > Career Path
Following Jesus > Career Path
As a Christian, a career path is not our goal. The goal is to follow Jesus, and thus seeking to fulfill the mission.
This does not mean that you should not go to school to be a ________ because you believe God is calling you to reach a certain people group.
However, following Jesus trumps your career path.
A job never takes priority over following Jesus
18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
These men left everything to follow Jesus, their career path, family business, family.
So now we answer… What’s the point of a job?
9 And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.
So we
Receipt of custom = tax booth
Matthew left his job that paid very well to follow Jesus.
In the Bible, location always dictates the job, job never dictated the location.
As you follow Jesus, He will provide you with the exact job you need.
For example, when God called me here I worked at a bank for a season out of necessity.
David Shelby worked at a bank when he was in Colorado, when God called him here he drove busses, now he’s a cop.
Location dictates job, job does not dictate location.
Take Paul as an example.
1 After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth;
2 and found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.
3 And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.
4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.
1 After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth;
Wherever God takes you he will provide a job for you.

One of the primary objectives of a job is to pay the bills (provide for the family).
Money makes the world go round so you’ve got to have a way to make money.
Key to it all: Work to live, not live to work.

Being rich is not a bad thing, the job you work will determine your wealth.

We need Christians in all areas of the workforce.
The Bible is very clear, if you don’t work then you don’t eat.

6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.
7 For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;
8 neither did we eat any man’s bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:
9 not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us.

Jobs are dictated on where God has you, not the other way around. Paul was a tentmaker because he was in Corinth.
27 And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.
28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Cesar.
29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judea:
30 which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.
Wherever God takes you he will provide a job for you.

These people had to have jobs in order to send money to the Judeans.
One final note:
In the Bible, location almost always dictates the job, to my knowledge job never dictated location.
As you follow Jesus, He will provide you with the exact job you need.
Typically the enemy will use a “perfect” job to lead away Christians from the path God had them on.
Examples of job being dictated by location, when God called me here I worked at a bank for a season out of necessity.

Tony worked as code enforcement officer after God called him to Iola.

In conclusion, a job is necessary in life. Just make sure you keep it in it’s proper place. Remember: We work to live, not live to work. A job helps you pay your bills and fund the mission.
