1-9-08 Old Testament Notes

The prophet does not introduce new religions. I.e.  Joseph Smith. Deut 13.1-5

The true Biblical prophet comes to past. Deut 18.20-22

Biblical Prophesy is conditional. (Jer. 18.5-11) When they call for repentance the people are giving the chance to repent.\

God’s revelation is giving in his son. (Heb 1.1-2)

What makes a minor prophet?

  1. Minor prophets are of major importance.
  2. Their message consume a minimal amount of space.

Obadiah

  1. The brevity of the book, briefest of all prophets
  2. The prophet featured in the book.

·       Servant of the Lord.

  1. Date of ministry (845BC)
  2. Resident of Judah
  3. Theme of Message = Judgment on Edom (Edomites were descents of Esau)

Joel

Jehovah is God

Son of Pethuel

Prob. Lived in Jerusalem.

Date 830 BC

Theme of message = Repent or return to the Lord.

Best known for = the prophet of Pentecost.

Occasion of the book. Crises of Locus

Purpose of the prophesy =

1) call to repentance (change of attitude that results in a change of action.)  

2)To announce the imminent coming of “The day of the Lord”.
