Intro:
Baptism video
Interesting how baptism has been ( and may always be) such a subject of fascination, study, and debate.
Sincere Christians for millennia have striven to understand what part baptism plays in our salvation process.
Our class is going to spend a few weeks looking at the Word on the topic.
No one in Christianity argues that baptism is commanded.
But sometimes we pull the act out of its context and that’s what we need to look at the next few classes.
Baptism is one element in the process of conversion.
John 3:16 NLT
16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
To believe in Jesus means we trust and follow him as both Lord and Saviour.
When we commit to trust and follow Jesus, we express this faith by repenting from sin, confessing his name, and receiving baptism by immersion in water for remission of sins.
The Bible teaches baptism as the normative means of entry into the life of discipleship.
Baptism marks our commitment to regularly die to self and rise to live for Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Salvation

Salvation and right relationship with God are:
Ephesians 2:8–9 NLT
8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
Baptism, according to Scripture, is the point at which we seal our decision to repent, place our faith in Christ, commit ourselves to the path of discipleship, and receive God’s forgiveness and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
John 3:5 NLT
5 Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.
Matthew 28:19–20 NLT
19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Acts 2:38 NLT
38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 16:31–33 NLT
31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.” 32 And they shared the word of the Lord with him and with all who lived in his household. 33 Even at that hour of the night, the jailer cared for them and washed their wounds. Then he and everyone in his household were immediately baptized.
Acts 22:16 NLT
16 What are you waiting for? Get up and be baptized. Have your sins washed away by calling on the name of the Lord.’
Romans 6:3–4 NLT
3 Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? 4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.
Galatians 3:26–27 NLT
26 For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.
Gal. 3:
Colossians 2:11–12 NLT
11 When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature. 12 For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.
Titus 3:4–6 NLT
4 But—When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, 5 he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. 6 He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior.
1 peter
1 Peter 3:21–22 NLT
21 And that water is a picture of baptism, which now saves you, not by removing dirt from your body, but as a response to God from a clean conscience. It is effective because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 22 Now Christ has gone to heaven. He is seated in the place of honor next to God, and all the angels and authorities and powers accept his authority.
Next week we’ll talk about what leads us to this decision.
