It Is Finished

Introduction: Dr. Dan Bowden, in his book “A Doctor’s View of the Crucifixion,” describes the intense thirst of Jesus. The dehydration caused by the lack of drinking anything since the Passover meal, the loss of blood from the scourging, the crown of thorns, the exposure to the elements all caused extreme thirst. Jesus, through parched lips and dry throat, called for something to drink. Nearby soldiers quickly gave Him some sour wine, much like our apple cider or pickle juice. Then Jesus shouted a cry of victory, “It Is Finished!” What did this cry mean?

John 19:28-30

I. The Pain is Over.

Though we can never understand the depth of Jesus’physical pain, we must not forget Jesus was fully human. The pain was real! Now as He approached death, His physical suffering was over.

II. The Prophesies are Fulfilled.

Since sin entered the human race in the Garden of Eden, God had been promising He would send a Savior to redeem mankind and provide salvation. Now the prophesies are fulfilled!

III. The Price Has Been Paid.

The Greek word telelestai means a debt has been paid in full. It can also mean an assignment has been accomplished. Praise God “Jesus Paid it All, All to Him I Owe!”

Conclusion: What Jesus did for us demands a response. What is your response to Him?
