What is the work of a tree? What work do we expect a tree to do?
First thought you might say “nothing.” What do you say? To create shade, to bear fruit, to strengthen a hillside, to cover up something ugly, to provide shelter to other vegetation, to support an ecosystem. Well then, it seems to have all sorts of purpose. Purpose.
Isn’t that what we jump to what is the point, the point behind this work?’ Who determines it’s work? The one who planted it. The gardener, or the landscaper, the land owner - the one who decided it’s role and gave it purpose.

Consider Adam. What was his work? To name the animals to work the garden and to bear fruit and multiply. Now I shouldn’t do this but I kinda think Adam’s day job is kinda funny. Naming the animals. I imagined him journaling one morning. Yesterday Eve and I finished the southwest corner. We found some interesting creatures- a few more of the same— We’re headed out past the Tigris today… I thought up a few cool names last night… I’m thinking Plataphant - or maybe platypus.
but then… we writes. God told me I did a good job yesterday. He said he watched me chasing down that hamster. He said he watched me support that branch from the peach tree. I told him how much I love Eve how she has been such an amazing friend, how much she has helped me. So I just thanked him again for her. Anyway, I better start the coffee, I’m hoping to meet with God before we cross the river to run these names by him.
Who gives Adam his work, who gives him his purpose. Who oversees the work? It’s the one who provides the work that establishes the purpose. So I’m suggesting that we long for purpose and that purpose is discovered in our relationship with the one who establishes that work. The gardener in our tree metaphor. So we must now ask.

1. Everything we do should be done in the name of Jesus. Give God your best.

I’d like to tell you a brief story
The other day I was in my backyard… working. Cleaning up some unwanted vegetation and my allergies had been bothering like crazy. I’d grown tired of the polite methods of dealing with the excess mucus- and I snarled together all I could and then “hocked a loogie” into the grass. All of this without a moments thought as I crossed the yard towards the garbage can, arms full of weeds. Well guess who was there?
The other day I was in my backyard… working. Cleaning up some unwanted vegetation and my allergies had been bothering like crazy. There was J.J. following behind me his pile of weeds and rubbish in his hands. “Daddy, why did you do that? Why did you spit?”
I replied as we walked along “ Oh… sorry. My allergies are driving me crazy .”

“Yeah, I’ve got allergies.”
Then I hear behind me J.J. spitting into the grass. I never turned around, but then I hear him say “I’ve got allergies too.”
Brothers and Sisters… Why does J.J. work in the backyard? Why does J.J. carry leaves to the garbage can? Why does J.J. spit in the grass?
Who is he working for? and what is his purpose?
And at what point does J.J. lose interest in working, as soon as Daddy steps inside. As soon as he perceives that the relationship isn’t there, he has no interest in weeds.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created.
The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Pastors don’t have a monopoly on ministry. Whatever you do, wherever your work takes you, God has uniquely equipped you to serve and to meet people at their point of need. Through your work, God has the power to redeem broken hearts and hopeless situations. You’re probably a lot like Michele. You can probably tell your own story of the sacredness of your work, and the miraculous ways God transforms the ordinary interactions of your day.
These moments of healing and hope that evolve through the course of any regular day? They are no coincidence. We partner with God as we put our hand to the plow—cultivating the ground beneath our feet, literally and figuratively. We carry the image of the Almighty God with us. When we surrender the work of our hands to his miraculous care, God breaks through, changing us and those we serve, forever, and for good.
