The Praise of the Multitude (Matthew 21:1-11)

Matthew 21:1–11 NLT
1 As Jesus and the disciples approached Jerusalem, they came to the town of Bethphage on the Mount of Olives. Jesus sent two of them on ahead. 2 “Go into the village over there,” he said. “As soon as you enter it, you will see a donkey tied there, with its colt beside it. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone asks what you are doing, just say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will immediately let you take them.” 4 This took place to fulfill the prophecy that said, 5 “Tell the people of Jerusalem, ‘Look, your King is coming to you. He is humble, riding on a donkey— riding on a donkey’s colt.’ ” 6 The two disciples did as Jesus commanded. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt to him and threw their garments over the colt, and he sat on it. 8 Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of him, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 Jesus was in the center of the procession, and the people all around him were shouting, “Praise God for the Son of David! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Praise God in highest heaven!” 10 The entire city of Jerusalem was in an uproar as he entered. “Who is this?” they asked. 11 And the crowds replied, “It’s Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”
The Waving of the Palm Branches Signaled Victory
The Spreading of the Cloaks Signaled Allegiance (cf. 2 King 9:13 - Jehu)
The Shouting of Hosanna Signaled Apparent Trust in Him as Savior (Hosanna = Save Now We Pray [yasha & na])
Psalm 118:25 ESV
25 Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success!

The Purpose of the Event (Why Did this Happen?

To Fulfill Scriptures (Zechariah 9:9; Daniel 9:25-26)
To Establish Jesus as the Passover Lamb (Exodus 12:3 & 12:6)
To Signal the End of His Public Ministry
To Acknowledge Acceptance of the Public Title of Messiah and King
To Officially Present Him as the rightful Son and Heir to the Throne of David

The Personal Application of This Event (What Must I Do?)

I Must ACCEPT The Role of Jesus as the Sacrificial Servant!

In regard to the SACRIFICE:
The writers of the New Testament certainly got the message. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 5:7, “For Christ, our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed.” Hebrews 7:27 says, “He sacrificed for sins, once for all, when he offered himself”, and Hebrews 9:28, ”Christ was sacrificed to take away the sins of many people.” John the Baptizer said, ”Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” Peter, in 1 Peter 1:19 says, ”You were redeemed with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or spot.” In the book of Revelation twenty or more times it refers to Christ as the Lamb. Revelation 5:6 says, “Then I saw a lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne…”. Revelation 12:11 – ”They overcame by the blood of the Lamb…”
IN REGARD TO HUMILITY
Zechariah 9:9
9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.
James 4:10 NLT
10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.
Illustration:
A young seminary graduate came up to the lectern, very self confident and immaculately dressed. He began to deliver his first sermon in his first church and the words simply would not come out. Finally he burst into tears and ended up leaving the platform obviously humbled.
There were 2 older ladies sitting in the front row and one remarked to the other, "If he'd come in like he went out, he would have gone out like he came in."
1 Peter 5:5–6 NLT
5 In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.
You Will Only Be an Effective Servant if You Humble Yourself Before God – Offering the Sacrifice of PRAISE and Your LIVING BODIES in SERVICE to HIM

I Must ALLOW Jesus to Be Your Victory over Sin and Death

On Palm Sunday a lot of folks will wave a Palm Branch Once per year, But Have YOU allowed the Victory Jesus has secured over Sin and Death into Your Life by Trust in Him?
Romans 5:2 NLT
2 Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.
Romans 5:20–21 NLT
20 God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant. 21 So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
After General Jonathan Wainwright was captured by the Japanese during World War II, he was held prisoner in a Manchurian concentration camp. Cruelly treated, he became "a broken, crushed, hopeless, starving man."
Finally the Japanese surrendered and the war ended. A United States army colonel was sent to the camp to announce personally to the general that Japan had been defeated and that he was free and in command.
After Wainwright heard the news, he returned to his quarters and was confronted by some guards who began to mistreat him as they had done in the past. Wainwright, however, with the news of the allied victory still fresh in his mind, declared with authority, "No, I am in command here!
Have You Been Informed of the Victory of your Savior Jesus over Sin and Death? If you Know and Have Believed, Then it is Time to Rise Up in Victory in the Victory of Jesus and Allow Him to Break the stranglehold of the enemy’s control over you!
As Hebrews says, “let us lay aside weight and the sin that hinders us and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith...

I Must Give My ALLEGIANCE to Jesus as LORD and Savior

The Multitude was declaring allegiance on Nissan 10 - Selection Day, but 4 days later they were Crying out, “Crucify Him!!!”
Will You Swear Allegiance to Jesus, not for One day a year, or even one day a week, but for ALL ETERNITY?
1 Timothy 1:16–17 NLT
16 But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life. 17 All honor and glory to God forever and ever! He is the eternal King, the unseen one who never dies; he alone is God. Amen.
Jeremiah 7:23 NLT
23 This is what I told them: ‘Obey me, and I will be your God, and you will be my people. Do everything as I say, and all will be well!’
John 14:15 NLT
15 “If you love me, obey my commandments.
John 14:23 NLT
23 Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them.
To Whom Do You give Your Allegiance? Remember the Words of Joshua - But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served ..., or the gods of those, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.
