The Painful Realities Of Hell
THE PAINFUL REALITIES OF HELL
LUKE 16:19-31
Introduction:
Jesus is the source for most of what we know about life after death. He gave us the material that informs us on
the subject. The story of the rich man and Lazarus is the most familiar of his statements.
How should we understand this story? Is it a parable, or is a report of an actual case? Most scholars see it as a
parable, but some insist that it has all of the marks of an actual account. But it makes little difference which
position you take since the words were spoken by the Lord—they must be regarded as revealing truth.
Jesus addressed the words to the Pharisees who loved money and felt secure about their hope of heaven.
They interpreted their financial prosperity as a sign that God favored them. Jesus shocked them when he
revealed that it was the poor beggar who actually enjoyed the favor of God—not the un-named rich man. It was
unthinkable that this successful man would actually be banished from the presence of God in eternity.
Our goal is to learn what we can about life after death—especially for those who are eternally lost. What kind of
place is Hell? Why are men confined to Hell?
I. THE UNSAVED DEAD GO TO HELL IMMEDIATELY AT DEATH.
II. THE UNSAVED DEAD SEE WHAT THEY HAVE MISSED.
III. THE UNSAVED DEAD SUFFER PUNISHMENT.
IV. THE UNSAVED DEAD REMEMBER.
V. THE UNSAVED DEAD EXPERIENCE HOPELESSNESS.
VI. THE UNSAVED DEAD KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING ON THE EARTH.
