ReShape (Our Lives)
All the men, women, and children were filled with joy and celebrated with such passion that “the sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away” ().
The temple had been rebuilt, the people had been restored to the Torah (Pentateuch) (First 5 books of the OT) , and the walls had been rebuilt.
If the book of Nehemiah ended at this point, the Ezra-Nehemiah story would have ended on such a high pinnacle.
If the book of Nehemiah ended at this point, the Ezra-Nehemiah story would have ended on such a high note.
The temple had been rebuilt, the people had been restored to the Torah, and the walls had been rebuilt.
Unfortunately, the story continues and comes to a rather anticlimactic end. As we examine , we discover that many of the accomplishments have become neglected.
Nehemiah returns to Persia to resume his duty as cupbearer to the Persian King
12 years had passed
Nehemiah asks for another opportunity to return back to Jerusalem to check up on things
Scholars are unsure how much time had passed in between the time gap
Temple being neglected
People had fallen away from His word
People not following proper traditions and laws
Working on the sabbath
Not tithing
Using the Temple for Human prosperity
Mixed marriages with foreigners (Causing people to fall away from the one true God)
Why the anticlimactic ending?
The book started out with so much hope and so many principles that we should be practicing still to this day.
The book of Nehemiah reminds us that no matter how much social and political reforms we bring about, something is still missing for true and lasting change to occur.
God will bring about a new covenant
One that cannot be broken by his people
This new covenant will be about our hearts
“The day is coming,” says the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. 32 This covenant will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and brought them out of the land of Egypt. They broke that covenant, though I loved them as a husband loves his wife,” says the Lord. “But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel after those days,” says the Lord. “I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, ‘You should know the Lord.’ For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already,” says the Lord. “And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.”

And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations.
